If you are a college student looking to land a holiday retail job this season, these guidelines can help.

First off, you should know what the employer is thinking as they screen college students who are applying for their holiday retail jobs. Many employers complain that college students apply for holiday retail jobs and then leave those jobs to go home for the holidays; just when the employer needs them the most. Be aware that this is a significant consideration as the employer considers their staffing options for the holiday season - especially when they have options with a 9.8% unemployment rate.

Having said that, employers still encourage college students to apply for holiday retail jobs and college students should consider the following as part of an effective holiday job search strategy this year.

1. Set expectations.College students should know what they are getting into when applying for a holiday retail job and set realistic expectations with employers about availability and your commitment. Remember - do not compromise on grades and jeopardize financial aid or scholarships.

2. Prepare. Understand the job search process and get tips on college resume writing, job application and job interviewing from your campus career center. The market is very competitive.

3. Spread the word. Many college students land holiday retail jobs through networking. College students should share information with each other about where retail jobs are opening up for the holiday season. Be careful who you recommend though, since your reputation is on the line.

4. Consider options. Students shouldn't limit themselves to the dream job this holiday season. Keep in mind that even though it is a holiday retail job, it will still look great on your resume. Some students will not just need holiday retail jobs to kill time, but to help fund college in the spring. Future employers will still value this experience.

5. Use good communication skills and be courteous throughout the entire retail holiday job search. You never know who you will meet and who you might need to call on for a letter of reference in the future.

6. Figure out the basics. How will you get to work? Walk, car-pool or take the bus? Think about the pros and cons of each.

In a tight job market, college students need to really stand out. So think about how you will present yourself at work? Do you have the right attire or the right skills? Is a holiday retail job the place for you?

One of the keys to selling yourself for a holiday retail job is to apply to sell products you like. If you like books, look for holiday retail job in a bookstore. If you like electronics, consider big box retailers or certain departments in a department store.
