How to Layer Your Children's Clothes for Winter Weather

The Blizzard of 2011 is a reminder that layering your children's clothes for warmth is a complete necessity. Any part of the skin that's exposed to the harsh elements can become irritated, dry, chafed and damaged. Though frostbite can reach the appendages it's the extremities that suffer the most. Those who have young children know that getting them dressed properly for outdoor functions can be a disheartening struggle. Before the kids are even dressed there are often complaints of being too hot or having to go to the bathroom after you've put on their snow pants.Though it can be distressing and time consuming layering your children's clothing under their winter coats are the best way for them to stay warm in blustery weather.

Upper body

Though children may not like wearing an undershirt under a heavier piece of clothing it's very important to keep the torso area warm. It also protects the skin from chafing from clothing items like sweaters and sweat shirts.

Under shirts come in a variety of styles such as tee shirts, camisoles and long underwear (thermals). Thinner cotton long sleeve shirts can also be used for layering. Items that are made with materials such as polyester can be hot and itchy which can cause discomfort so choose materials that are breathable.

Lower body

It's easy to fore-go layering the lower body because of the fit of your normal pants but remember it's still important for those moments you'll be out in the elements. Tights, thermal underwear, Cuddle Duds and leggings are easy to layer since its tight fitting and smooth. Layer these items with comfortable pants or snow bibs/pants and carry extra clothing with you in case your children need to change.

Another important thing to remember is layering your socks over the under pants or tights in order to make putting snow pants on much easier.

Extremities

Though it can be difficult to keep your kids in gloves and heavy footwear there's nothing worse than to have a child whose feet and hands are wet or freezing cold. Gloves and mittens can be found in nearly every retail clothing store but should be well inspected before purchasing. Snowy weather brings on outdoor activities and the gloves and boots you choose should keep your children's feet and hands dry and warm. Before making a purchase be sure that these items have the appropriate insulation and are water and wind proof.

When your children wear gloves tuck the gloves into the sleeves of their coats. This will minimize the amount of skin that may be affected by the harsh conditions.

If your child wears snow pants be sure to layer the pants over the boots. If the pants are designed with adjustable leg opening snaps this is best tucked into the winter boots with the top layer of the pant over it.

Accessories

Scarves can be underrated for warmth but these accessories along with hats are priceless in cold climates. Wrapping your scarf around your neck and layering the loose ends under your child's coat is a way to keep the cold out and to keep your upper body much warmer.

Wearing a hat will prevent precious heat loss. Heat loss from someones head is between 20-30 percent. Strong winds can also cause your children's ears to ring and ache so a hat with ear flaps is optimal.
