How to Learn to Climb a Mountain

Regina Sass
For those amongst us who have an adventurous bend, mountain climbing is the ultimate challenge. There are a lot of things to take into consideration and all of them play a part in your safety and the safety of everyone in your group as well. Pick a good mountain climbing school and you will learn about glacier climbing, Alpine climbing, rock climbing and even how to climb a frozen waterfall. Don't even think about going mountain climbing without first taking lessons.

Alpine Accents International is based in Seattle Washington and offers courses for beginners and intermediate climbers. For beginners and intermediate, they offer an eight day training course with climbing on Mt. Rainier. Another one on Rainier is the Denali Preparation Course, another one for beginners or intermediate climbers. Choose the six day course for beginners or intermediate climbers with climbing in the Cascade Mountains or the eight day course in Alaska. The 10-Day Training Course takes you climbing in the Cascades and on Rainier and the 12-Day to Alaska.

The Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School is in New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Their programs include an Accelerated Rock Climbing 3 day course for beginners, Kids Multi-Adventures-a 1 to 4 day program for kids 7 to 17, Rock Climbing 101: Discover Rock Climbing--a one day program for beginners, Rock Climbing 201: Applying Your Skills--a one day follow up to 101, Rock Climbing 202: Just Climb!--the follow up to 201, Rock Climbing 301: Top Rope Basics-a two day program and the next in the series, Rock Climbing 302: Learn to Lead a three day session, Rock Climbing 303: Self Rescue-a two day program, Rock Climbing 401: Alpine Routes- a one day program, Rock Climbing 402: Aid Climbing-a one day program and Rock Climbing 403: Glacier Skills- a one day program and the last in the series. When you become an experienced climber, they also offer instructor training courses. Family Rock Climbing is a one or 1/2-day program for groups up to five, First Ascent Rock Clinic lasts five hours and is followed by Second Ascent Rock Clinic- a five hour followup and Top Rope Basics-one day

As you can see, mountain climbing takes some time to get to the point where you can go on one of the long trips the schools offer. And all schools are not the same. Every one will have a different set of programs. You need to look at more than one, maybe try one of the small one day programs first before you make a commitment for anything longer. It takes dedication and patience, but the rewards at the end are well worth the effort.
