You will learn that each college writing teacher is different. For example, one will make sure you put the thesis in the first paragraph. Another might not look for it until the third for fourth. As a college writer, you must learn to see exactly what they want-usually by asking.
High School and College:
In high school you may read some of the best titles-the ones you can understand too-
and enjoy them. It could be "Frankenstein," "Beowulf," or maybe "Grapes of Wrath." High school reading isn't always easy-especially titles like "Beowulf"-but a teacher is more apt to walk you through it in high school, less so in college. You have to learn to develop your own way of interpreting stories into your own college essays, for example, or a way of seeing history from the past and comparing it to the future. Some teachers can help you one on one, at least in the small institutions. If you get this chance, take it, for it will develop your college writing skills more than anything else.
What's a College Essay?
Boiled down, we are still at the place where you have a thesis and a few points in your college essay. In high school, the average was, on a five paragraph essay, three points, unless you writing a final report for the semester.
But in college teachers will ask more of the student. You can still boil it all down to a few points, putting them on note cards, and then reorganizing them to make sense. Think of it as you would a fiction story: The character will develop, change over the course of the story, and so will you and your piece. The college essay is a short story developed into a few pages from key points-simple as that.
Getting Help:
If you have no teacher or TA (teacher assistant) who can spend time with you-or even if you do-consider meeting other writers. It vastly improves your college writing skills, and it's an easier way to learn than going through Spark Notes; you will also learn far more about your writing skills and how to apply them to the real world. This can solve many of your problems and get you a vote of confidence. Your college essays may be terrible-as many are-but you can improve the essay with simple help, and learn to make the next better. Also, if you have friends who are taking courses, a good way to catch a glaring error is to exchange emails and ideas.
Finale:
Lastly, if you want to learn good college writing skills in terms of essays, you will need to learn the basics behind success and failure. Learn from each college essay failure and success; do not get caught up in failures; never think your writing is perfect because of one 4.0.
A college writing course is rarely easy-it's a learning process. A 0.00 on your essay will hurt your grade, but it just means something in your strategy is flawed. You did something wrong, so find out. If you get a 4.0 on your college essay, your liable to know something you did was right, and learning from that success is just as important as from the failure. Your writing is your power. If you can make it work on the page, you're apt to succeed in college as a writer.
