How to Learn a Language Online

Leyla
Learning another language is a time-consuming process that many people do not have the time or energy for. Attending classes does not sound like much fun to adults who just want to enjoy their time off from work when they get home. Online learning has made learning another language more engaging, convenient, and fun for many people, however. Learning on your own or under a teacher's instruction is possible with online language learning.

Videos

Search for videos that teach the language you want to learn on YouTube. These videos are often free, and they cover a wide range of vocabulary and grammar topics. You will be able to see the words written on the screen as well as see it formed by a native speaker of the language in many cases, which can help you retain new words and information.

Language Exchanges

Online languages are an informal way to learn a language. Meet up online with a native speaker of the language you want to learn who will help you learn to correctly speak it. In return, offer to correct the use of your native language by your language partner. You will use voice and text chat to communicate online. A couple of online language exchanges include My Language Exchange and ITalki.

Tutors

Hire an online tutor to help you progress in a particular language. Some companies offer private classes in various languages, and freelance tutors offer courses they design to students. The advantage of online classes is that they are offered around the clock, making it easy for you to schedule a class when it is convenient for you. You can also enjoy small class sizes, instant correction of language use, and even one-on-one attention from a teacher or tutor in some cases. Prices vary according to the particular language, level, content, and teacher you choose. In general, however, you can expect to pay between $10 and $25 per hour for a private tutor. Buddy School, EduFire, and ForteMall are three sites that language learners can access to find tutors for the language they want to learn.

Online classes and language learning material gets you away from a traditional textbook- and classroom-based system of acquiring another language. Learn at your own pace and in your own home. Learn only the aspects of the language that are of interest to you, if you want to. Small class sizes mean individualized attention and accountability to be online to learn at a certain time. Language exchanges and online videos of language lessons are good for supplemental learning or for the more self-motivated learner.
