How to Learn Spanish Free

Lesson Three

In lesson two, accent marks and upside Question marks were introduced. You might want to know the meaning behind them, so we will first focus on this. Then we are going to learn the 5 W's and the word how, plus and, or, but, the, A, and is. Also, Mr, Mrs, and Miss.

Accent marks play an important role, because they can change the meaning of the word. When you learn how to correctly form verb tenses in later lessons, you will see how an accent can change the meaning alot. One example of an accent changing a meaning is the word llamo, which means I call without the accent. But if you use the same word llamó means he, she or you called in the past tense. These accent marks make the letter stressed, llamó, the ó is now fast and stressed.

If you are reading Spanish, the accent marks are already given to you, so you can read them as they are. Writing and speaking the accent, is a little more difficult. As you learn each word here, make sure you learn the accent mark as well, so that when you do write or speak Spanish you will be saying or writing it correctly and giving it the right meaning.

Question marks and exclamation marks are always written upside down at the beginning of each question or accented statement, and then a normal question mark or exclamation mark at the end of the sentence. When speaking Spanish this will not be used, but when writing, it will be necessary to know to use them.

The Five W's are Who, What, Where, When, and Why plus the word How.

Who - Quién = Kee en
What - Que = Kay
Where - Donde = Dohn deh
When - Cuando = Coo ahn doh
Why - Por qué = Pohd kay
How - Cómo = Co moh

Conjunction words.

And - y = ee
Or - o = oh
But - pero = peh do
The - El or La = depending on the masculinity of the noun
A - a = ah
Is - es = ehs

Salutations

Mr - Señor = Sehn yohd
Mrs - Señora = Sehn yohda
Miss - Señorita = Sehn yohd ee tah

Practice using the 5 W's and How at home, like when someone asks you a question or tells you something, think of the correct W word or How in Spanish. Like this, Dad, I am going to Jeff's house. You can think of any one of the 5 W's. Try thinking of them and then saying them out loud.
