How to Learn New Subjects as a Busy Person

Lance Esondi
Most people have become too busy to really take the time to branch out and learn new subjects or ideas. With work, errands, chores, and children, there is not much time in the day to sit down with a book or a new hobby and really enjoy soaking in new information. Since that can't be part of most people's day there has to be some options that make learning fit into the busy day that is already there. There is a technique that uses audio that can help someone learn a new subject quickly that will work with a busy schedule.

The secret is to use what are called podcasts. A podcast is simply an audio show that is generally in MP3 format. These were originally amateur shows but in the last decade many have grown into large, professional shows. There are podcasts on just about every subject imaginable. If you want to learn gardening or a new type of gardening, there will be a variety of podcasts to choose from to download to listen to on your computer or portable media player.

The advantage of listening to a podcast is two fold. First, you can have audio running while you are driving the car, doing chores, or during other parts of the day. Since they are not linear like a book, if you miss a few parts of the show it doesn't matter that much unlike an audio book. Second, since there are a variety of shows on most subjects, you can pick the ones that you find entertaining that will make it easy to listen to. What's nice about an entertaining show is that the person or group of people talking are passionate about the subject making learning a bit easier.

To find podcasts there are a couple options. Some use the iTunes application and do a search for podcasts as there are thousands available. The other option is to search the search engines for your subject of interest plus podcast. There are also podcast directories where everything is organized by subject.

When you find podcasts on the subject of your choice, download a few of them to see if any of them are something that you are willing to listen to. Once you find a show that you enjoy be sure to bookmark that page or add it on iTunes so that you can get the new shows as well.

If you have always wanted to learn that new subject, now you have a simply way of starting. This method will fit into your day. After listening to about ten shows, you will have enough knowledge on the new subject to have a substantive conversation about it. As time goes on, you will be surprised about how much is learned even if only listened to in the background.
