How to Use Up Leftover Sauerkraut

Sophie Spyrou
A little sauerkraut goes a long way. But if you have a lot of sauerkraut left from last night's German-inspired meal, it would be a waste to throw it all away. What are some ways to use up leftover sauerkraut?

Add Sauerkraut to Green Bean Casserole

Are you out of fried onions to top off your green bean casserole? Rather than make do without your usual topper for the green bean casserole, add leftover sauerkraut instead, for a piquant, tasty meal. Add the sauerkraut a few minutes before removing the green bean casserole from the oven so that it will be warmed through when it is time to dish up. There are bound to be requests for seconds with this dish!

Add to Sauerkraut to Beef Stew

Beef stew can easily turn out bland and boring, however hard you try to add a rich, deep flavour to the dish, but if you want a little pick-me-up without making drastic changes to your recipe, add some sauerkraut to the pot. A few drops of vinegar will also add an extra kick to the beef stew and give it a lift from its usual taste.

Add Sauerkraut to Soup

When it comes to soup toppers, you have a number of available options, such as crackers, croutons, sauteed mushrooms, caramelised onions and much more. But why not change things up for once and add sauerkraut to the soup instead? Leftover sauerkraut can be added straight from the leftover container to soup while it is still steaming hot.

Add Sauerkraut to a Refreshing Summer Salad

A summer salad is both refreshing and a healthy way of adding vitamins, minerals and fibre to your diet. If you have some leftover sauerkraut from last night's meal, add a handful to the top of your summer salad. Sauerkraut eliminates the need to dress your salad with heavy, oily salad dressings, as it is packed full of flavour.

Sauerkraut is healthy, tasty and versatile. There is no reason why you should only serve sauerkraut with schnitzel and dumplings. It can also be added to a number of other dishes, such as green bean casserole, beef stew, soup, a summer salad and a number of other dishes to add depth and extra flavour to food.
