How 'Legend' Shaped My Love of Movies

The Fairy Tale Romance

Lisa White
During my years as a student of Georgia Southern University I worked as a manager of Mugs-N-Movies and spent my years waiting tables and being surrounded by newly released movies. Each Friday I looked forward to opening a new movie and no matter how many movies Mug's opened the feeling never changed. After graduating college I moved to Atlanta but I still loved movies and whether it was a video at home or a new release at the box office my fondness for movies never staggered.

It was only after moving to South Carolina that I happened on a movie by the name of "Legend" with Tom Cruise and Mia Sara. I decided to purchase the DVD because I had never seen this movie and could not believe how young Tom Cruise was when it was filmed in 1985. Years after the film was released I watched "Legend" for the first time in my mid-twenties and was impressed and frightened by one of the most beautifully filmed movies.

Romantic Fairytale

Although I was a bit too old to believe in fairy tales the romantically sweet nature of this film is captivating. It's easy to fall in love with the story line as well as all of the characters. Princess Lily and young Jack portray and unbreakable love in a setting that is the epitome of light and dark. Good verses evil. Unlike many movies which creates the to-easy-to-cross fine line of good and evil there is a solid premise that there is nothing in between and the scenes suggest there are no gray areas in this fairytale. While its' romantic genre is based off of young love it still holds the meaning that love transends time and good always wins.

Special Effects

Though some of the reviews stated the special effects were "cheesy." I, on the other hand, found the special effects to be years ahead in comparison to other movies. The cinematography only lent to the beauty of the plot and created a backdrop that was as vivid as the characters.

Characters

This science fiction/ fantasy movie's characters were interesting and matched the theme of the movie well. It is a romantic fantasy so the characters were bold and daring especially the character of Darkness. Darkness or evil is portrayed in so many movies as an inanimate object but the Minotaur with large horns and overly pronounced jawline creates an overwhelming dark and evil figure.
