How the Lego Ferris Wheel Made Me Come Out of the Lego Closet

A Product Review that Could Change Your Life

Mark Rollins
I know millions of adult Americans who live a secret lifestyle. I am, of course, referring to the Lego maniacs who are twelve years old and older. Yeah, I know you thought I might have been thinking some other alternative lifestyle, and hey, maybe it got me a few more hits for this article.

However, I am talking about how adult Lego maniacs closet their passion. They are forced to pursue one of the most constructive hobbies on the planet in private, all due to some unwritten rule that says that Lego is a kid's toy.

Well, if Lego is a kids toy, then adults should be a lot smarter than they actually are! Lego has been around for about 50 years (in fact, they just celebrated their 50th anniversary). They have had a lot of time to grow up, and so have Lego-enthusiasts.

For example, no one in Lego would have ever tried to make a Ferris wheel twenty years ago I'm sure that if someone had tried to make a Ferris Wheel back then, people would have said: "Are you an idiot? Legos are square and rectangular. Ferris wheels are round. It's not going to work." Fortunately, due to advancements in Lego technology, the round Lego Ferris wheel came to live. True, it may not be a real wheel per se, but even real Ferris Wheels are just complex polygons.

Not only did Lego make this Ferris Wheel, but they made it motorized. That's right, with 6 AA batteries, a gear wheel, and a tiny rubberband, the Ferris Wheel turns around and around. How cool is that? Very.

I have to admit that as an adult, I found it difficult to put the wheel portion together. It took a lot of patience, which I don't think many children within the recommended age range will have. Therefore, I decree that this toy is meant for adults!

In fact, I hereby declare that all Lego toys will no longer be toys. They are now something that adults can get into to. It is time for all Lego enthusiasts to come out of the Lego closet!

Come on, step out. Tell all your friends and relatives that you are a player! Put all your best models on display. Don't worry if your models are better than others. Get the Lego Ferris Wheel if you can't think of anything original to make.

I want to start a revolution. In fact, leave a comment if you have an "out of the closet" Lego story. Go on, do it!

Where were you hiding on the Lego anniversary a month or so ago?

Wonderful read, Mark! I still play with the grandkids' Legos- it's one of the best toys made!

Well, I've considered doing it for quite a while now. My beautiful Lego city (airport, train, hotel, space shuttle, fire house, and more) was destroyed by my 2 year-old brother when I was 12. After that, they got packed away.

Along with reading, it was my favorite hobby as a kid. My boyfriend loved them too. Can you imagine what he and I could do if we pooled our large collections (which are still at our parents' homes)????

I'm going to have to give this serious thought!
