How to Lessen Nausea During Pregnancy

Riza DP
The first trimester of pregnancy is never easy. Within these months the woman feels the symptoms of the first signs of pregnancy like nausea and vomiting or simply what is called "morning sickness." I am in my two months of pregnancy and I have been struggling nausea most of the time. What usually triggers my nausea is when I smell something strong like perfume, fried food or the frying oil itself, trees with distinct scent like pine trees, bacon and the like. At this stage of my pregnancy, my usual problem is when my husband or I prepare something in the kitchen and I feel like all the smell of the food masks the whole house. Then my nausea sets in. Battling this problem, I accidentally discovered two products that helped me lessen my nauseous feeling through inhalation and rubbing some on my belly button and the upper-center part of my abdomen.

Vick's Vaporub Ointment

As we all know, Vick's Vaporub is known as cough suppressant and topical analgesic. I personally use this for cough or for massaging. I believe that the scent of the active ingredients on this product like menthol, eucalyptus and camphor help subside my nausea. The smell is so soothing and makes me feel relaxed. I observed that my stomach settles in and my dizziness is lessened.

Pak Fah Yeow (White Flower Embrocation Medicine Oil)

This ointment is a Chinese product. This is popular for treating headache, stomachache, travel sickness and muscle pains. I was surprised when I found out that this product has the same active ingredients like Vick's Vaporub: menthol, eucalyptus, camphor. Another ingredient that is present in this ointment is methyl salicylate or popularly known as "oil of wintergreen."

I have come to wonder if the active components of these two products would be key ingredients to help pregnant women reduce or eliminate the nauseous feeling once they inhaled something strong that triggers vomiting or dizziness. It personally works for me through minimal and gradual inhalation which I am grateful of, thus, reducing my smelling dilemma battles.
