Incense comes in many forms such as: stick, cone, loose, censer, etc. The most common one is the bamboo stick incense that can be purchased at any candle or home decoration store. It is usually sold with a boat-like wooden base which has a groove in the middle. That groove is there to collect the ashes as the stick burns. If you look closely, at the curved tip of the base, there is a tiny hole. That is where you put the thin end of the incense stick, so that it is raised in the air at an 25-45 degree angle. If you cannot find the small hole, consider either returning it to the store or piercing one yourself, depending on the price you paid.
When it comes to the flame, there should not be one. The stick should burn, releasing scent and smoke into the air. You should not see the fire, only an ignited tip that should look orange or blue. To get that effect, just light it up, as you would a candle and when the stick starts burning, simply blow it out.
When you light the incense stick, make sure that there are no flammable surfaces nearby, like curtains, pillows, carpet and so on. Pay a special attention to curtains, as they may come in contact with the flame if the wind from the window blows them over. Also avoid highly flammable objects, like paper. And of course keep your hair away from the flame when you light the incense stick. Also be aware that the ashes may fall outside of the base and damage the surface they land on.
When you want to put out the incense stick, just put the tip under running water or in sand. But the easiest way is to just wet your fingers and squish the ends. It is usually a good idea to open the window and get some fresh air after you finished enjoying the incense. Although they are fun, they tend to make you a bit dizzy, so use them with caution. And avoid strong fragrances.
Have fun.
