How to Make a Lighted Potpourri Jar as a Inexpensive Gift

Sarah
For Christmas one year I was really short on cash, but I still wanted to give everyone something. That's when I cam across this idea. It takes about fifteen minutes and shouldn't cost you over ten dollars.

Things you need:

1 mason jar (can be any size)
1 set of small Christmas lights (can be any color, I prefer white, and how many on the light set should depend on how big the jar is)
1 bag of your favorite smelling potpourri (size of bag should fill the size of your mason jar)
1 doily (this needs to be big enough to fit on the top of the jar and hang over)
1 spool of ribbon (any color will do)

Ok, first things first clear a spot for you to do your project, the potpourri can get a little messy. Then plug your lights in before you do anything with them to make sure they all work. I have made this project many times and not checking the lights, it can get very irritating if you don't. Then you take your set of Christmas lights and strategically place the inside of the jar. The end that plugs in should not go in first, for you will need to plug your project in at the very end.

When you have your lights the way you want them, open up the bag of potpourri and place in between the lights in the jar. Make sure you fill all the opens spots so it looks nice, and fill it all the way to the top.

Then take your doily and ribbon, this is the tricky part. Fit the middle of the doily onto the top of the jar and go down about and inch, this is where you are going to tie the doily onto the jar. Remember what holes you need to weave the ribbon through.

Now take your ribbon and start weaving it in and out of every other hole, like weaving. You can also do every two holes or three, depending on the style of doily you have. Now when your done weaving your circle into the doily, place it on top of the jar and pull the ends of the ribbon to make it tight. Finish it off now but tying a bow, so it does not go anywhere.

There, now your finished, all you have to do is plug it in and wait for the lights to heat up the potpourri, and smell its wonderful aroma. This gift not only smells great, but is very pretty to plug in at night, and can be used day after day.

Be careful not to leave it plugged in too long. I have never had a fire hazard problem, but still don't take any chances.

Now you have made a wonderful gift that will be sure to impress, all fewer than ten dollars. You can also put your creativity into it also. You can add glitter to the jar, or anything else you think would make your jar more presentable

Great advice! My husband and I deal in a lot of sales, and I may use this idea to create a new source of income! Thanks for sharing!
