How to Lighten Up Your Day at Work

Heide Lynne Canlas
Work is not meant to burn people out or to tie them down. Work should be able to make people find fulfillment in themselves as productive beings, actualize one's potential, and allow one to earn a living. Hence, working need not be drudgery, and the atmosphere at work should not always be heavy and distressing.

Work must be done in light and comfortable circumstances, so that even the most difficult task would be less of a hassle. In many occasions, it is up to the individual to make his or her workplace lighter.

Here are some tips that you may want to keep in mind if you want to lighten up your day at work:

1. Give yourself some small rewards. If others won't reward you for a job well done, let them. Just make sure you reward yourself. Treat yourself to little things that you want - perhaps a new audio CD, a book, or even as simple as a bar of chocolate. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and you will always get motivated to work your heart out in the office.

2. Exercise. Exercise does a lot in making you healthy. It also releases endorphins, those natural painkillers and happiness-inducing substances. Try flexing those muscles before or after work - go to the gym, start walking, or try out yoga and tai chi. Physical activity can distract you from work-related concerns and give you that breather from stress.

3. Smile and laugh a lot. Don't take yourself or your work too seriously. Take time to laugh with colleagues by sharing jokes and funny stories. Find humor in disaster. Don't let those worries in the workplace turn you into an old, ugly hag. Make sure your pearly whites are shown in those smiles. A smile makes for an instant facelift, not just for you, but for your officemates, as well.

More importantly, remember that you are the main reason why you are working! So take care of yourself and do not be tied down by working. You can always pause for a while and take a break whenever you feel stressed out at work.

Remember, you can only really enjoy what you do when you love doing it. So, whenever you go to work, don't forget to have fun!
