One objective you need to understand - not just for your self defense, but for your life in general - is how long you want to live.
If you decide that you need to live for as long as possible (your full genetically determined lifespan) you will need to be aware of some specific goals you'll need to set yourself, to ensure that the objective is realised. A long, comfortable life is a reasonable goal for all of us to have and that is why we defend ourselves against anything that threatens this objective.
The question then becomes, what factors could potentially threaten your ability to fulfil your natural lifespan? These will then become the self defense priorities you'll need to work on if you are to achieve your objective. The priorities to be considered if we are to live long and prosper are as follows:
Avoid being assaulted (mugged, shot, stabbed, murdered or beaten up). These are the common self defense issues addressed in all common self defense philosophies.Learn how to actually defend yourself in an attack (although avoidance is a more successful strategy, there are rare instances where it's impossible to avoid certain threats and you need to tackle them directly).
Learn how to cope with stress - it cannot be totally avoided but it can be minimised and it can be dealt with.
Don't smoke - or stop smoking - smoking will reduce your life expectancy and quality of life.
Moderate your consumption of alcohol.
Try to make the most of your family life (a good set of close relationships tends to extend one's life, research has discovered).
Don't become inactive - exercise regularly (but carefully and correctly, to avoid chronic injuries developing).
Protect your joints - or your quality of life will decline and you may even die earlier as a result.Control your weight and keep your body fat low.
Restricted calorie intake is the only proven method of extending lifespan.Keep your waist measurement/circumference within the specified criteria.
Moderate your red meat intake.
Keep your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar within the correct parameters - using suitable and appropriate methods.
Have regular health checks, especially as you get older (to pick up potential problems early - when something can still be done about them).
In summary, remember that prevention is always the best approach to the potential pitfalls of life which may reduce your lifespan or quality of life and prevention is also one of the key aspects of self preservation - alongside scenario modelling, proactive reaction and pre-emptive defensive action (when unexpected crises arise).
