To begin with, follow the three Rs of 'greening' your life, Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle.
Reduce waste, energy and water consumption with aerators on all faucets, dual flush toilets, insulation of heaters and water pipes, ceramic cooking pots in the kitchen, energy-saving appliances and compact fluorescent lamps (CPLs) everywhere.
Reuse just about everything you can from cloth bags to plastic containers to blankets to toothbrushes which are great for cleaning the refrigerator and hard to reach places, and kitchen scraps which you can compost in a bucket.
Recycle paper, grocery bags, tires, plastic bottles, furniture, car batteries, and bath water by having navy showers. Then, use or buy products made from recycled material; toilet paper, soap dishes, clothes, building material and wheat straw wood for kitchen cabinets.
Make sure everything you buy for your consumption is organic and local. Buying local saves energy and expenditure and ensures the product gets from producer to buyer in the shortest time possible, thus fresher produce. You can even grow and cook your own food. A small vegetable garden or mini container garden will do more than add a spot of green.
Commercial cleaning agents are toxic and their fumes can be hazardous to your health. Switch to biodegradable cleaning wipes or use vinegar, cream of tartar, baking soda, castile soap and lemon to put the gleam back in your house at no cost to your health.
Hybrid cars are now available like the Toyota Prius, which uses both electricity and petrol, and others that run efficiently on solar or renewable energy. They are worth every penny.
You can buy your power 'green' too, from clean, renewable sources of energy and appliances that have the Energy Star rating which help in conservation and are environment friendly
Lastly, if you are into going green, then a green job would be a wonderful way to help protect and sustain the environment. Examples of people with green jobs are architects, scientific researchers, electricians, surveyors, ecology tour guides and nature photographers.
