If you are in college, then you know all about living cheaply. If you are somewhat removed from that lifestyle, then this is a guide for you. Many people simply do not know how to live cheaply. In this article, I will discuss how to live cheap.

The most important thing that you must do in order to maintain a cheap lifestyle is to record each and every one of your expenses. Leave no stone unturned when you do this. Write down each of your major expenses that happen to be recurring. Include among these things your rent, utility bills, food expenses, transportation, and any money that you might spend on entertainment. Are you going to want to go to the movies during this semester? Chart some money for that. In addition to those recurring expenses, write down the major purchases that you might have to make over the next few weeks. If you are moving, consider those expenses in addition to any other large purchases.

Like most college students, you food might be what you spend the most money on. In this case, be sure to keep each and every receipt that you happen to record. If you are currently buying brand named foods at the grocery store, consider a cheaper alternative. Do you really need Tide detergent? You probably do not. You could get by just fine with a bargain brand that will save some money. Consider cutting corners in this way with many different purchases.

You might also want to keep buying your things in large numbers. Head out and buy your non-perishable goods in bulk. Things like toilet paper and paper towels often come at a huge discount if they are bought in large numbers. Other things that you can save on in this way are cereals and other family-sized foods. Consider joining a wholesale food dealer such as Sam's Club, which will allow you to buy food products for much cheaper than you normally would be able to .

Utilities are probably a pretty big part of your monthly expenses, too. Think about how you might be able to lower these costs. Window sealer can be an effective way to limit your heating costs. Sometimes, you can simply wrap up in blankets in order to stay away from the cold weather and save on the heating bill. Since you live with only yourself or some college buddies, you can concentrate on keeping yourself warm and not worrying about warming the entire house.

It will be much easier to keep track of your expenditures if you keep everything recorded on a spreadsheet. Use Excel or another Microsoft program that will allow for easy book keeping. Once you have this plan, do not deviate from the plan under any circumstances.
