How to Live for a Day Without Technology

What to Do when the World Shuts Down Around You

Cee Peterson
Today we had a day were technology failed us. Thanks to a dump truck running over a telephone pole, Wasilla, Alaska stepped out of the world. The dump truck ran over a telephone pole that supplied the fiber optic connection to the Matanuska Susitna Valley. In an instant we had no internet service, no cable television services, no cellular service, and no long distance service.

Myself like many Americans, have converted from the old copper phone lines to the new high tech cellular network. My family is always on the go. Each member has their own cell phone. We could not see the reason to have a landline phone within our home. After today I am re-considering my decision.

My cell phone is my best friend. I go no were without it. Not being able to pick it up and call whomever was devastating. I felt abandoned by my best friend. Instantly I had no way to communicate with my fiancé or children.

When you become very comfortable with having the modern conveniences it is extremely rough when they are not there.

In case we may have forgotten about what we did before we had the internet, cable tv, cell phone and long distance, I have compiled a list of things to do to pass your time.

  1. Read: A book or magazine will do the trick. In the fast paced world that we live in it is often difficult to sit and just read.
  2. Play a game: This is the perfect excuse to gather the family and open up a board game. This can also give you the opportunity to talk with your family and steal back some of those precious moments that pass us by so quickly now.

If you are alone, the hand held games can come in handy. Many of the most popular board games come in a travel sizes made for one.

  3. Playing cards: Most of us have a old deck of cards lying around. You can play these as a group or by yourself.
  4. Computer: Most computers do come with games that you can play without being connected to the internet.

You can also take advantage of the offline time to write your novel.

  5. Craft or hobby: This gives you the perfect amount of time to finish all of those craft projects that you have started over the years. You can also get re-connected with that long lost hobby that you enjoy so much.
  6. Spring Cleaning: It is just the right time of year to start this project. Everything is in bloom outside. It is time to dust, vacuum, and reorganize.
  7. Sleep: You can take advantage of the piece and quite to catch a few zzz's. You do not have to deal with all of the annoying disruptions that come with everyday life.

Did my boss email me yet? What is happening on Days of our Lives? Just leave all of that behind and take a snooze on the couch.

I know there are many more things that can be accomplished without technology. Be creative and enjoy.
