One time a week. The human body can only put up with so much stress and activity before it needs to rest and relax. Set aside one time a week where you absolutely refuse to schedule any activities or have any plans. This should be at least five hours long and it should be a break for the entire family. Family members are not required to spend it with each other, but they are required to engage in resting or fun recreation. This is not the time to drill your son or daughter in their basketball technique. It should be stress and work-free.
Couple time. Make time with your spouse, outside of the kids, on a daily basis. This could involve morning sex before you both get up for work, or having a long, enjoyable private lunch together in the afternoon, or reading a book together in bed. Whatever activity it is, make sure that both of you are relaxed and stress-free, instead of venting on your spouse because you have nobody else to vent to. Take your frustration out on Fido if you need to, but keep your couple time peaceful.
Family time. Whether this is a group gathering at the dinner table or the parents take each child out for individual time together, children who grow up in family oriented households grow up to be healthy, emotionally mature and financially responsible. Keep your family gathering regular, even if it is just for a short period of time each day.
Solitary moments. When you are able to grab a solitary moment, revel in it. This may be a long hot shower or a quick dip in the pool. You may find a particular beautiful day on your way to work this morning or it could be reading with your child in the evening. These moments may not be regular and they certainly may not last very long, but they are the little highlights in your day that you look back on and smile.
We all need less stressful lives. Sometimes we create our own stress and this is unfortunate. Identify key behavior patterns, such as a bad temper, which you bring into the spirit of today. Changing your attitude can make it a less stressful day for your whole family.
