How to Live Life According to the Serenity Prayer

Live Life

Kurt Evans
In Alcoholics Anonymous, we open and close every meeting with the serenity prayer. God, grant me the serenity, to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. This is because we are admitting that we are powerless over alcohol. We talk about a lot of things in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous, and one of them is, how to live life according to the serenity prayer.

Acceptance

There are things in the world that we can change and there are things that we don't have any power over or, any influence of; that we cannot change. If we have acceptance of people, places, and events as they are, then it makes life a lot easier. It's not always easy to deal with life when things don't go your way.

Changing What We Can

When we focus on changing what we can, then we are being constructive and productive. We're using our power to create a life to the best of our ability. When we put forth an honest effort; then, life rewards us in due fashion.

Instruction Manual

When we're born, we aren't born with an instruction manual, unfortunately. The serenity prayer can serve as an instruction manual for life. Accept the things we cannot change, change the things we can, and have the wisdom to know the difference between what we can change and what we can't change.

Accepting The Things I Cannot Change

When we're accepting the things I cannot change when we live life, then we are releasing a heavy weight of responsibility off our shoulders. We breathe a sigh of relief as we take a moment to relax, as we now know, where to turn to, when we need guidance to help us in life.

The Serenity Prayer

When we live life to its fullest potential, we display all of the aspects of the serenity prayer in our behavior. This means that we accept the things we cannot change and love them for what they are. It also means that we focus on the things that we can change and pursue life with vigor and determination.

Worry And Fear

When we're busy working on the things that we can change, we don't have time for things like worry and fear. Worry and fear take a back seat when it comes to actually getting things done in this world.

How To Live Life According To The Serenity Prayer

When we're focused on how to live life according to the serenity prayer, the focus comes more on our actions and how they affect the world around us.

The Laws Of Science

The laws of science have taught us that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. What this tells us is that there are consequences to our actions, whatever they may be. The consequences can be either good or bad.

Consequences For Our Actions

With the knowing that there are consequences for our actions, comes the responsibility of carefully considering the results of each action before taking them. We often have actions that happen spontaneously throughout life. This makes us have to be able to make quick decisions in the moment. We only get good at this through experience.

Experience

Experience is what life gives us. We learn and grow as a result of experience.

I've always loved the serenity prayer, but I've also always had a worrying problem, so the serenity pryer only did minimal comforting for me. I'm a control freak, I guess, and the idea that there are things I just can't control scares me sometimes. I just recently got to a point where I've accepted that I can't control everything. I'm trying my best to make peace with that idea.

My late grandfather was in AA and this was a very important prayer that has come to mean a lot in our family.

Prayer is powerful. The Serenity Prayer is a wonderful prayer for so many, in so many ways. How wonderful to share your thoughts and feelings on this.

The Serenity Prayer is beautiful in its simplicity. Nice job breaking down how to live it.

This is very good. I know people who carry this prayer around with them on a little card. Nice job.

Always a good principle to live by Kurt. It runs along with my sentiments that "It is what it is and you do what you can do. Somebody gets helped along the way and we're all better for it, including you." I appreciate your work.
