How to Live Your Life on Pennies a Day by Learning the Art of Frugality
Reduce the Amount of Money You Spend Every Day to Improve Your Overall Quality of Life
The first thing you need to do is reduce waste. We all are guilty of wasting money at some point in our lives. The art of frugality involves figuring out where the waste is and fixing it. You need to know what all of your expenses are and then go through them one by one. Find out where you can cut costs by reducing services or eliminating them altogether. Some examples are: instead of paying a gym membership, you can work out at home; reduce your Cable TV package; check for better deals on insurance, phone, internet service, etc. In addition to those ideas, you can also reduce the waste of energy. Avoid wasting electricity and water by paying attention to the details. Turn off electrical items when not in use. Use energy saving appliances when possible. Fix water leaks and take shorter showers.
Don't buy name brand items just because of the name. In many cases, you can find high quality items that are generic or unknown brands. One of the keys to frugality is being able to find good information about products so you can get the best value for your hard-earned dollars. I'm not saying you should go out and buy the lowest priced item you find. Sometimes, the name brand item IS the best value. You have to 'do your homework' to determine the best path to take.
You can do a lot of your shopping on the Internet. Believe it or not, there are some very good deals on many of the shopping sites. Some of them will ship the items for free or at a very low cost. Another great benefit of shopping this way is you don't have to leave your house (no crowds to deal with and you save gas money, too).
Almost every city in the country has some free activities you can do. The public libraries are full of books and media you can check out at no cost. You can go a park and have a family picnic or plan a fun sporting event. Check your local newspapers and see what things are going on. You may be surprised by what you find. Anytime you can do something for free, you are using the art of frugality to the max.
Another thing to consider if you are having trouble surviving on your present income is an adjustment to your standard of living. When I was growing up, I was taught that we work towards a high standard of living. As you progress in your career, your living standard improves. Today, it seems like many people have been taught that you should have a very high standard of living right out of school. That's how people get into debt, because they want to have everything right away. Reduce your standard of living to what you can afford. Then reward yourself with a better standard as you progress in your career.
Do your best to avoid paying interest. We all know that a lot of debt is not a good thing. Of course, the only reason debt is bad is because of interest. You end up paying more for items than they are worth. Therefore, you should only buy what you afford to pay for. If you have debt, you need to reduce it steadily until it is eliminated. When it comes to living a life of frugality, interest payments are your number one enemy.
