How to Live with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)

Minimize Toxins in Your Environment - Build Up Your Immune System

Sherry Walker
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is an illness resulting from the body reacting in a negative way to chemicals and other products. One could experience sensitivities to perfumes, household cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, formaldehyde, cement and so much more. Some reactions could be headaches, rash, nausea, memory loss, dizziness and flu-like symptoms, to name a few. MCS is an illness that confuses many people because in this 21st century, the illness can manifest itself in various ways. It has yet to be determined if it is brought on by the individual having an autoimmune system, neurological problems or candida. The symptoms can be created from very low levels of chemical exposure and you could experience sensitizations that cause you to avoid normal activities or have a social life. Whatever the cause, there are several steps to help keep it under control.

Chemicals
It is hard to live in a chemical free environment, but you can minimize your exposure. When you are making home improvements, use non-toxic and water based products. If you can afford to hire someone else to do the work, do so. Leave the home until the work is done. Before returning, clean the ducts, walls and air in the home. Also have good ventilation when using any type of cleaning products. It is best to use natural products to clean with when you can. Avoid construction areas when driving. Incorporate as much fresh air in your environment as possible.

Foods
Each person is different and one may or may not have allergic reactions to foods. It is best to keep your immune system in check and eat as healthy as possible. Keep your organs like your liver, kidney and digestive system in good working condition. Do not consume a lot of sugar or fried and toxic foods. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. Your body will let you know what foods are suitable for you and what you can and cannot tolerate. Pay attention to how you feel after eating.

Home Environment
Avoid carpet as much as possible, especially in your bedroom. Use blinds instead of curtains because the fewer dust catchers you have, the better. It is especially good if no one smokes in the home. Create a room to relax in that is clutter free and does not have a lot of traffic or accumulates dust.

Social Life
Some people select to avoid a social life. Remember to keep your organs like your liver, kidney and digestive system healthy. This will contribute to your having a quality life. The better you care for yourself the less pressure you have to place on others to accommodate you. If after taking care to do all that you can and you still cannot tolerate perfumes, fresheners, smoke, etc., then distance yourself from certain establishments but stay as sociable as possible.

Clothing
Wear clothes that allow your skin to breathe like cotton fabrics. It is good if you can wear "wash and wear" clothing. Do not use a lot of soap and double rinse your clothes when you can. Use natural soaps, liquid detergents and biodegradable products (Go Green). Some people with MCS find they cannot wear clothes from the dry cleaners. Washable and loose fitting clothing tend to be the most comfortable.

There is information on the internet to help you deal with MCS in your life. MCS was confirmed as a know disease in 2004 and since that time, a lot of information has been shared by people with personal experiences, nutritionist and even those in the medical field. To date, there is no known cure, however, one is encouraged to avoid whatever triggers their allergic reactions. If you know someone with severe sensitivities, please be loving and patient with them. The average person will not have a reaction from the things that affect someone with MCS. Also do your research and always check with your doctor regarding any illnesses you have. Toxins Are Toxic
