How to Live Through Severe Depression

It's What I Do on a Daily Basis

What I Live With
Depression is a condition that I have lived with all of my life because when I was three years old, I got hit by a car and suffered a head injury. This caused severe brain damage and I was in a coma for two weeks after the accident. The doctors didn't think I was going to survive and yet, I proved them wrong.

This is my life

I'm now 39 years old and I feel that I'm qualified to write about depression since I have lived with it for so long. One thing that you have to realize is that it's not normal thinking, to think about suicide every time some little problem comes up. When I say little, that doesn't mean that they are big or little problems because when you live with depression; every problem is a huge problem.

It's not so simple

So, you might be thinking that all you need is some effective problem solving ability; this is easier said than done. There's no way to effectively solve problems when you're in a depressed state of mind. Everything is blah and nothing is worthwhile.

Coping With Depression

So, you have to come up with some ways to get out of that state of mind. Two of the ways are with counseling and medication. Now these ways are not easy because not every medication is the same for everyone. Also, sometimes the medications stop working and need to be changed.

More Ways To Combat Depression

Some other ways to beat depression are by staying active; both mentally and physically. Since I'm a writer, I'm always thinking of new things to write about. And since the invention of the internet has made it so much easier for; as of yet, unpublished people like myself to get material out into the world and get seen and read by people. There are websites like Squidoo and Associated Content that allow people a free outlet to get out there thoughts and ideas to others when they aren't able to pay for website hosting.

If The Depression Gets To Be Too Much

If you get really depressed, you can always go to the hospital, where they will monitor your medication and also give you counseling to try to figure out better ways to live life better. You should never be afraid to go into the hospital to get help. I've been there three times myself, so far; where I have been diagnosed as having severe depression. After each stay, I came out feeling better than before. Also, after each stay; I came out on different medication than before.

Depression Battle

As you can see, there's no easy way to get out of depression, each one requires some work and effort on your part; but in the end, I think it's worth it. Of course, the alternative is always death; but, then where will you be?

You Can Beat Depression

Here are some ways to help combat depression that I've found to be effective:
Do some walking
Go jogging
Get out and smell the fresh air
Actually smell the roses
Get involved in a group
Watch comedy movies
Laugh as much as possible
Watch what you eat(it affects you more than you think)
Avoid drugs and alcohol(except prescribed drugs, of course; taken as directed)
Read Self-Help books
Write a journal
Write a gratitude journal;(it's changed my life for the better)
Practice being grateful
Try things that you've never done before
Talk to other people
Have conversations with loved ones
Volunteer
Help somebody else

One thing to remember is that depression is a disease, and often times it needs to be treated with medication. You should never feel guilty for being depressed because it's not your fault. There's a chemical imbalance going on in your brain that's causing you to feel the way you feel and getting help for it is nothing to feel ashamed about.

I'm trying really hard to live happily with someone with severe depression. I may not succeed because the behaviours are hurtful and intolerable, and there is a child trying to live a normal life.
