How to Locate a Notary Public

Maggie OLeary
As a notary public for the US Military and for the State of Kansas, I notarize thousands of documents every year. Almost everyone has needed the services of a notary public at some time in their life, or will in the future. I hear a lot of questions from people who are looking for a notary and can't find one. If you ever find yourself in need of the services of a notary, there are several definite places you can find one.

Courthouses

Every courthouse will have several notaries working in the building. These notaries are usually in the County Clerk's office, but each attorney's office, and court office should have a notary public on hand as well.

Banks

All banks must have at least one notary public. Many documents are processed in banks each day that need notarized, and they must have a notary on hand. Depending on the size of the bank, you may find more than one notary on duty at any given time.

Law Firms

Like the courthouse, most legal documents need notarized, and a notary public must be on hand. Depending on the size of the law firm, their may be several notaries public available.

Schools

Some schools have a notary on hand. All universities and community college have a notary or two on staff for notarizing student and school documents.

Real Estate Companies

Due to the nature of their business, real estate and mortgage brokers must have a notary on staff.

Notaries can be found in many places, and usually only charge $2 - $5 for their services. You can also become a notary yourself - more on that coming in the next article!
