How to Locate and Repair Swimming Pool Leaks

If you own a swimming pool, it is always easy to locate and repair the leaks. Once you open your pool for the year, you can easily locate the leaks by locating the water pouring out. Though locating the source of leakage is different issue, it may or may not be easy to notice.

Firstly, make sure that the water which you notice missing is actually a leak or not as it could be something else. There are 3 main causes of leaks; plumbing leaks, shell leaks, and evaporation. Prior going any further, you should be sure about the cause of the leak as many times it may be splashing of water caused due to diving by people into the pool.

Evaporation is a common cause of water loss in swimming pools, and there is a way to determine it. Take a large container filled with water and place it on the first pool step. Next, remove some water from the container to bring it to the same level of pool water. Now, place the container there for few days with no one using the pool for entire time.

When you check back in a few days, the levels should be the same. If the water level has gone down equally in both, the cause is due to evaporation by sun. If water in the pool has dropped down significantly compared to container, it means there is a leak in your pool.

Swimming pool leaks are one of those problems which occur rarely enough for you not to know how to locate and repair them; but often enough for you to be frustrated at their occurrence. The remedy involves two simple steps: Locate the swimming pool leak and then repair the swimming pool leak.

The process of locating the leak can start near the pump and the filter. Still, be sure to check for any moist areas around the pool area and see if you can track where the leak is coming from. Usually the leak will involve something to do with the pipe or with the shell. For aboveground pools, simply trace the gap from where the water is leaking and then repair it.

However, locating the pool leak becomes much more difficult if your pool is underground. If this is the case, it is suggested you examine the shell and scrutinize nearby areas to identify the source of leakage.

Don't lose hope when locating the swimming pool leak becomes seemingly impossible; remember that more or less the search is nothing more than just a simple process of elimination. Simply use common sense and visit all possible sources of the leakage until you find the correct one.

As soon as the location of the swimming pool leakage has been identified, you must decide whether it will be you or a professional who will repair the leak. For example, if the source of the leakage is the shell, you will probably want a trained expert to repair the problem as shells (especially for underground pools) are extremely difficult to repair for a layman.
