Apple's iPad has astonished the world with its innovative characteristics. It is amazing how such a light, thin and stylish gadget can do so much. Being characterized as a true breakthrough release, the iPad features a powerful processor, a long-lasting battery, superb audio quality, 9.7" LED-backlit display with IPS technology, fast web-surfing experience and a uniquely sensitive accelerometer. Especially, the latter is really changing the way you used to play games and handle apps so far.

The Function of Accelerometer

But why is an accelerometer that important? An accelerometer basically detects the way you hold the iPad and alters the orientation of the screen based on a horizontal or vertical level. This modification allows you to browse photos, movies and videos at any angle you hold the device, making images fit perfectly on the screen. Gaming experience is also enhanced as with the accelerometer you can totally control your character or perform basic functions just by tilting the iPad.

How to Lock the Accelerometer

On the other hand, the accelerometer can be a true trouble if you simply want to surf the web, send an email, read an e-book or enjoy your favorite tunes. As a matter of fact, with the slightest tilt, the iPad changes its orientation. Apple has cleverly anticipated of that function, offering you the option to lock the accelerometer by simply sliding a button.

There are basically two methods that allow you to lock your iPad's accelerometer:

Method One

1. Hold the device with the screen facing towards you and the Home button at the bottom.

2. On your right hand, you will find a small slide button placed just above the volume buttons.

3. Gently slide it downwards until you get an image displaying a turning arrow with a padlock in the middle of it. The padlock indicates that you have successfully locked the accelerometer.

4. If you wish to unlock the accelerometer, simply slide the button on the opposite direction. You will see again the turning arrow, only this time without a padlock in the middle of it.

Method Two

The new upgrade on iPad's operating system gives you the option to lock the accelerometer straight from the Menu. Just double-click on the Home button, scroll the list and tap on the turning arrow. Once the padlock appears, the accelerometer is disabled. To enable it again, just tap again on the arrow icon.

Important Tip

Locking the accelerometer only affects the orientation of the image on the screen. Even when locked, you can still enjoy your favorite racing game and tilt your device to avoid obstacles and finish first.
