The training session is very much depending on the age, character and breed of your dog. It will vary based on the three different categories and there are not fixing solutions for it. From my experience, puppy will be more playful. They can only efficiently enjoy shorter training period compare to adult dog. As adult dog are much more mature and they are willing to learn and to be train for longer period of time. Again, this is very much depending on the breed and character of your dog too!
You can identify when your dogs are not enjoying the training. When they are not paying attention to the training or start to play or fool around with something else indicate that they start to get bore with this training session.
Puppies training session can be very short, a 30 seconds training will be sufficient for playful puppies. But how can you successfully train a puppy within 30 seconds? So, I might suggest you to split up the training session to few times a day in order to let them play around in between the training session. This will make the puppy training more efficient and effective!
For adult dogs, they can pay attention for longer time. As they are not mature compare to puppies. But the training time should range around 2-20 minutes depend on the breed of the dog. Toy dog will enjoy shorter training time compare to watch dog.
Time constraint might not be a strong issue here, as long as the dogs are enjoying the training then both dogs and dog's owner will be having fun during the dog training and both parties will be benefit from it!
But no matter how long training you are provided for your puppies or dog, I would always end the training with positive and good move. What does positive and good move means? Example, if you are training your dog to fetch, make sure the training session always end up with it fetches something successfully. If, it does not manage to do that, they make sure the training is end by doing something which you can reward it in order for the dogs to enjoy the training and it will always feel enjoy with the training and eagerly waiting for the next session training to come!
