How to Look like the Girls from Sex and the City

The Movie's Fashion is Expensive and Outlandish; Recreate it for Yourself!

The Sex and the City movie is everything long-term SATC fans could have hoped for; it's awe-inspiring scenes are humorous, endearing, and tear-inducing for even the most cynical of females. The characters were developed much more than they have previously been throughout Sex and the City seasons, allowing the audience a closer look into the hearts of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte. These four powerful women are different in so many exciting ways, but the one aspect of their lives that is never-changing and always inspiring is the fashion.

It is glamorous, it is fabulous, it is completely over-the-top yet desirable. Each woman has her own style, yet it is Carrie who takes the cake for the most original and trend-setting. It might be impossible to pull off her extravagent accessories in the real world, but that doesn't mean we can't improvise! One of my favorite looks in the movie and an easily duplicated accessory is the variety of tops and dresses Carrie pairs with a black studded belt. This is probably the best look to recreate, it is fabulous yet doable for many different occasions. In a scene with Big (one of many), Carrie is wearing a fabulous green dress with the black belt around the middle. The belt curves around her delicate waist, giving Carrie a funky, sexy look and updating an otherwise unremarkable dress. How to twist and mold this trend into your own affordable version? It's just too easy.

1. The black studded belt. The belt is great for making anything in your wardrobe sexier and more noticable. To find a less expensive version, search in stores like Wet Seal and Forever 21; these stores are known for having lower prices and a variety of fashion trends, from what could be called "preppy" to the more "punk rock" styles. Grab yourself a thick (but not too thick) black belt; the design of the belt does not need to exactly resemble Carrie's high fashion one. If you aren't into the silver spikes so much, choose a belt with more circular shapes or something a little less flashy (although in true Sex and the City spirit, too flashy is never a bad thing).

2. The shoes! Any SATC girl will tell you that the shoes are the most important aspect of any outfit. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte somehow manage to prance all around New York in heels, heels, and more heels. A more practical answer for the working girl, such as myself, would be to design a fabulous outfit with flats in mind. The right flats can still give you the appearance of a sexy, fashionable diva. If you swear up and down on the idea that to be fashionable is sometimes painful, grab a pair of the chunkiest, highest heels you can find! Pairing a sexy black studded belt with chunky, attention-getting heels allows you to save money on the rest of the outfit; with such outstanding accessories, the dress or top you choose can be as plain as you want it to be.

3. What's the occasion? My favorite look with the black studded belt and chunky heels is a lighter gray sweater, a little baggy, and darker leggings or skinny jeans. This outfit can easily be tweaked for a night out with your three best friends (SATC style) or for a daytime activity (work, shopping, just living and looking great). For going out, the sexier the better. Wear the sweater (short or long sleeved) with cute, preppy shorts and chunky heels; this is sure to draw attention to your glamorous appearance. Dress tops with shorts and a pair of heels are always in fashion, you can trade the shorts for leggings on cooler nights. For work or a day of shopping, walking on four-inch heels can be a pain. Add flats to the outfit instead; you might find the look is more comfortable for you if the leggings/shorts are traded in for your best skinny jeans and a large, designer-looking bag!

With these accessories and ideas on how to fit them to your own needs, you will have the confidence to show off your "I am woman, hear me roar" attitude a la Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. If your real-life Mr. Big is less than thrilled with the new you, tell him that real men know how to handle a strong, independent woman. Then kick him out the door and head to nearest restaurant for cosmos with the girls! Any problem is easily solved with a little bit of Sex and the City.
