How to Look Taller in a Tux

Kristi Patrice Carter
Nothing makes a man look more attractive than a tux. However, when you aren't already tall, you might feel like less of a man on your big day. There are several ways to make yourself look taller. As long as you choose the right style of tux, proper shoes, and stand straight, you will gain an inch or two visually. It also helps if you can talk your bride into wearing shoes without heels.

Step 1

Choose the right tux. Black is the best choice for color because it makes you look slimmer and taller. The classic tux tricks the eye to make a man look taller. Each piece is designed to make a man look his best. High rise pants and the cummerbund both extend the line of the legs. A tux with vertical lines or pinstripes also enhances your height because they draw the eyes up and down the body. A single breasted two button suit elongates the torso and adds some height. When selecting the pants, avoid cuffs and wide leg styles because they will make your legs look shorter. A bright tie also draws attention upward, giving the illusion of length.

Step 2

Wear shoe lifts or insoles. Shoe lifts are placed on the bottom of the shoe and actually lift the entire sho e. You can visit local shoe shops or tailors to see if they offer this service, or you can visit the American Heelers website. All you have to do is ship them your shoes, and they will place the shoe lifts on your shoe and send them back to you with an invoice for payment. They even pay for the shipping both ways. See Resources for link. Shoe lifts can be very discreet while still giving you the height you desire, especially if you are wearing black shoes. Insoles are also discreet but usually only lift the heel of the foot. Insoles can be inserted inside the shoe to give you a little added height. TallerHeels.com sells insoles that can add 3-5cm to your height. See Resources for link.

Step 3

Ask your bride to wear flat shoes. Your bride might already have her dream shoes picked out, but you might be able to convince her otherwise once you tell her how it makes you feel. Remind her that if she has a long flowing dress, nobody will be able to see the shoes anyways. Even if they can see the shoes, everyone will be paying attention to how beaut iful the dress is, not the shoes. It's very popular for women to wear ballet slippers with wedding dresses, so see if she would opt for that.

Step 4

Stand up straight. Remember how mom always twisted your ear trying to get you to stand straight and tall? This is why! You can make yourself look taller simply by standing up straight with your shoulders back rather than hunching over. To practice standing straight, you can stand against a wall and keep your head, shoulder blades, buttocks, and heel all touching the wall at the same time. Good posture not only makes you look taller, but it also prevents future health problems and pain associated with slouching. To see an example of bad posture versus good posture, visit the Cascade Wellness Clinic's website. They provide pictures to really help display the difference. See Resources for link.
