Let's face it; all of us will experience the anxiety of stretch marks at some point in out life! There's no need for panic though. Nobody is perfect and practically everybody will gain some type of imperfection; be it stretch marks or bruised knees. Embrace them - it makes us who we are!

Saying that, there are however steps we can take to ensure we do everything possible to prevent stretch marks from occurring, or having already occurred- improving the look of them with the aim of getting rid. Don't forget: you are not alone in your worries. Don't let stretch marks make you feel insecure. Between 75 to 90 % of women gain some sort of mark during pregnancy.

By just following these three basic steps you should be able to treat your body in accordance applying what you know and feel is right for you.

* Learn about what you're trying to prevent.

Stretch marks...what are they? Yes, they don't look great but why do they occur when we get pregnant?

Often, when pregnant, a woman can gain stretch marks around the tummy area (abdomen), breasts and occasionally upper arms, thighs, hips or buttocks. These tend to be the main targets as they are areas where large amounts of fat can gather.

You may notice that during pregnancy stretch marks begin to occur more noticeably around the sixth month and onwards. This is due to the constant high levels of hormones at this stage in your pregnancy. Stretch marks occur in the dermis; the middle layer of skin. Stretch marks are not caused by just stretching! The high levels of hormones you have inside your body begin to prevent necessary fibres from keeping your skin; which is rapidly growing, taut. This is when the dermis will slowly start to tear apart, resulting in stretch mark's appearance.

* Notice the signs.

Stretch marks tend to start out as pink or purple patches on the skin, which gradually begin to turn a silvery white. Remember to always check your skin thoroughly, especially around the later stages of pregnancy. If you catch a stretch mark at an early stage, you might be able to prevent it from becoming too noticeable and soften its appearance.

* Treating the stretch marks - know the real deal from a fake.

Companies want to make money; they would claim the moon was made of cheese if they could, just to get you, the consumer, to buy a block. As expected there is no end of products available that all claim to help the appearance of stretch marks - don't be fooled. Many do nothing more than just moisturise your skin. When pregnant, from month one I lathered my tummy in oil. For me, this kept my stomach pretty mark-free. Everyone's body will react differently. Make sure you ask a professional at a chemist or pharmaceutical store when you go and buy a product; they will advise you on what to buy and what they recommend.

For those of you who feel that stretch marks are a real issue, you could visit a dermatologist. Micro dermabrasion is a known and accepted procedure for stretch marks. Laser skin remodelling is also another possibility. Think deeply as to whether procedures like these are right for you. They are expensive and not 100 % effective.

For the old fashioned, cost free solution, I suggest learning to love yourself and accept the body you have. If you don't want the world and his wife knowing about your marks, cover them up, don't make a big deal about them to people and they won't even notice them, I promise! Over time, you may find that stretch marks often become less noticeable.

Taking into account any of these methods should surely help you to counter the problem of stretch marks and give you inner confidence and most importantly outer confidence to live a normal stress free life.
