Set your scale on a flat, hard surface and weigh yourself. Make sure to weigh yourself first thing in the morning so that you get an accurate weight. Measure yourself with a flexible measuring tape. Measure your upper arms, chest, waist, hips and thighs and make note of these measurements. Taking your measurements, in addition to your weight, will show you how your body is changing shape.
Step 2
Add a variety of healthy foods to your diet. Lean proteins such as chicken and pork help your body build new muscle, while plenty of fresh vegetables will give your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. California has a wide variety of fresh foods due to its lush farmlands and close proximity to the ocean. A trip to the local fish monger or produce stands available on many California beachside shopping areas will allow you to purchase all the fresh, healthy foods you need.
Step 3
Drink plenty of water as you work on losing weight. As your body burns fat, waste products build up in your cells. Increasing your water intake will help flush out these toxins and keep you from getting dehydrated in the warm California air. A glass of water before a meal also helps your stomach feel full so you do not eat as much.
Step 4
Increase your exercise levels to maximize your weight and inch loss. California has a fairly moderate climate that makes exercising outdoors a very enjoyable experience. There are also a number of gyms available at every hour of the day to accommodate for the busy lifestyle of many California residents. You should aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per day as well as 30 minutes of strength training to burn existing fats and build new muscle.
Step 5
Take a swim in the ocean to burn calories and melt away inches. California has over 800 miles of coastline, offering plenty of opportunities to incorporate swimming into your exercise routine. Be sure to pick a beach with a lifeguard and stay within a few yards of the shore to avoid becoming too tired and being carried away by riptides.
Step 6
Move your workout to the beach for an extra challenge. Walking in the sand causes your body to sink slightly, making your muscles work harder to pull yourself up with each step. A jog along the beach or a game of volleyball in the sand gets your body in motion and keep you from becoming bored as you lose pounds and inches.
