How to Lose Weight when You Are a Kid: Tips for Parents and Kids

Tiffany Bell
With childhood obesity rates on the rise, there are both parents and children wondering how to lose weight when you are a kid. When it comes to weight loss there should be different approaches for kids than what are used for adults. You have to remember that kids are still growing and a very restrictive diet is not the best option for them. You also need to remember that what happens in their childhood may mold their relationship with food and diets for the rest of their life.

How to Lose Weight When You Are a Kid - Get Moving

When it comes to exercise for a kid, you don't have a strict regimen of exercises that they should be doing. Simply having the kid get active for at least 30-60 minutes a day can make a difference in their health and weight.
Sports and games are a great way to get a kid moving. Sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, and football can be a great way to incorporate exercise into the day and have fun. Games like tag, kickball, and kick the can also give a kid a way to be active. Other activities kids can try to get more active are swimming, volleyball, bike riding, taking walks, hiking, jumping rope, and hula-hooping.

If you are interested in more aerobic activities or want something for inside during bad weather, there are a few different workout series that are geared specifically to children. Tony Horton from P90X fame has a workout for kids as well as there are Barbie workout videos and Disney workout videos.

Losing Weight for Kids - All Things in Moderation

Remember that how a person eats when they are kid and how they form a relationship with food or diet can stick with them their whole life. Kids should never be completely taken away from all junk food. If a parent deprives their child of all junk food, that child is more likely to sneak food as well as develop unhealthy diet and food habits.

Instead moderate the foods that children eat. Once a week you can even schedule a treat meal or a treat dessert but make sure you eat healthy on the other days of the week. Be sure that the kid gets plenty of lean protein, calcium for their growing bodies as well as tons of fruits and vegetables. You never want to completely cut out an entire food group for a kid. A child should never be put on the Atkins diet which drastically lowers the amount of carbohydrates a kid eats. Instead encourage the kid to eat healthy whole grains instead of empty carb foods like white bread or white rice.

A Few Added Tips for Kids Who Want to Lose Weight

If you are kid who is looking to lose weight, you need to realize that the weight will not come off overnight. It needs to be done in a healthy and safe manner. Also, you should check with your parents or your doctor before you try losing weight. You may think that you are overweight but in fact you are in a healthy weight range for your height and age.

Get moving as much as possible. Instead of sitting in front of the television, go outside and play. Or if you don't want to play simply ask your parents to take a walk with you or at least start doing some jumping jacks whenever a commercial comes of the TV. The more you move the healthier your body will be and the more weight you can lose.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your parents about wanting to lose weight. They will be able to encourage you and help you with your weight loss journey. You can even talk to your school counselor or nurse as well as your pediatrician about the best ways to lose weight and what goals to have.

Let's not wait any longer and allow the childhood obesity rates to continue to climb higher. Encourage your children to eat healthy, get exercise and most of all feel good about their body.
