You and those you will be on the conference call with will need a Yahoo Messenger account. If you don't already have Yahoo Messenger, download it free from http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.
In order for your conference call to work and for Yahoo Messenger to work, you will need to have a microphone and speaker. Most newer laptops come with built these build in to the monitor screen. If you don't have both of these, you will need to install both prior to making your conference call.
You can type in the conference call because the box is there and available, just as in a regular Yahoo Message IM chat session. But ideally you want hands free, talking and not typing, since this is after all a conference call, not a conference chat.
Some people like to see who they are talking with while chatting. Having a web cam might be a good idea if you want to add a more professional touch to your conference call. Not using a web cam is just as fine.
Be sure each conference call participant knows ahead of time if you plan to use a web cam or not. Also be sure each conference call participant is aware of what's needed to be able to participate in the call.. the speaker, the microphone, having Yahoo Messenger installed on their computer, and having a Yahoo ID already set up.
Set up a time with your contacts for the conference call to take place. Make sure you family knows about the time so that you won't be disturbed during the call. Have the children occupied with something fun and safe so you don't have to stop during your call to tend to them.
You will open Yahoo Messenger and log in to your account. You will need your Yahoo ID and password to log in.
At the top of your Yahoo Messenger IM box is the menu. Click on the word "Actions". On the menu that comes up, scroll down to the bottom and click on the words "Invite to Conference".
A box will pop up and on the left in the Messenger List is a list of people that you have as your contacts. Select the contacts that you want to invite to your conference call and click "Add" to put the names in the Invitation List in the right hand column. If the name of the person or persons you want to invite to your conference call is not listed in the Messenger List, use the "Invite Other" button to invite them.
When you have everyone that you invite in the Invitation List column, click the "Invite" button at the bottom of the box. This will send a message to those you invited to your conference call, and they will be able to accept the invite from their end.
Having a low cost conference call is as easy as using the Yahoo Messenger conference call system. It's easy, it's free, and it can be as professional or as loose as you want it to be. Why spend money when you can save on conference calls with Yahoo Messenger?
