How to Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

Sarah Lipoff
High blood pressure affects many people causing health problems ranging from headache to stroke. A blood pressure reading of 140/90 or higher is considered high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measure of force of blood against the walls of the arteries. The higher number in a blood pressure reading is when your heart beats, or pumps blood. The lower number is the reading when your heart is at rest between beats. High blood pressure causes the heart to work harder and causes more pressure and stress on the body.

Calcium

Calcium is a beneficial supplement for everyday health and aides in lowering high blood pressure. People not ingesting daily-recommended allowances of calcium are at greater risk for high blood pressure. The daily recommended allowance for calcium is 1,000 mg a day. Calcium not only helps keep our body strong with a healthy skeletal system, it assists with normal muscle contraction and relaxation and is helpful in regulating the rhythm of the heart.

Potassium

The National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHNES III) in 2001 found that there is a link between potassium and lowering high blood pressure. They determined that diets high in potassium, at least 8.5 servings (4,100 mg) a day, and lowered blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure. Apples, apricots, bananas, and figs are examples of fruits that are high in potassium.

Magnesium

Magnesium plays a role in helping the body as one of the main energy producing molecules. It helps in proper muscle function, along with relaxation of the heart muscles. Magnesium helps with ATP production or Adenosine triphosphate, which is beneficial for cellular respiration. Magnesium is a mineral and can be taken as a supplement or found in foods such as green vegetables and fish like halibut. It is recommended adult females take 310 mg a day and adult males 400 mg a day.

Fish oil

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, College of Medicine found that daily intake of fish oil is beneficial in lowering high blood pressure levels. Fish oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are extremely heart healthy. Up to 1,000 mg of fish oil can be taken daily to fight high blood pressure.

Vitamin C

The Boston School of Medicine and the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon University declared in 1991 that 500 mg of vitamin C daily would significantly lower high blood pressure in hypertensive patients. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute also supported this. Vitamin C works as an antioxidant in the body and helps promote healthy body function.
