Many families this year are having a very tough time making ends meet. If your'e also having a tough time with your budget, then you may be looking for ways to keep your holiday costs down. Although Christmas is only two months away, it would be a good idea to begin shopping for Christmas as early as possible. This artiticle will give you some suggestions on how you can cut costs on your Christmas budget this season.

Sit down with your favorite beverage and a pad of paper and begin brainstorming your gift list. Write down the names of everyone you intend to shop for this year. Then budget a certain amount of money for each person. Make sure you are realistic about what you can afford. If your concerned about going over the amount your intending to spend, then it may be a good idea to purchase a gift card for that amount.

Gift cards have in recent years become very popular. You can give a gift card from department stores, electronic stores, hardware stores even grocery stores. Purchasing gift cards will not only help to avoid the temptation of overspending but will also save the time and cost of gas it would take to go from store to store.

One way that you can cut back on Christmas is to only purchase for the children of your family members and friends and not the adults themselves. For example if your in the habit of purchasing a gift for your brothers, sisters, and their children and possibly even other relatives then you may be able to discuss with your family this logical alternative.

Another way you can save costs this year is to avoid buying any new decorations. Sit down with your family and go through all of your existing decorations. You may even be able to get your family involved in making some new decorations by using items you already have laying around the house.

If you don't have enough wrapping paper left over from last year then you can always use tissue paper, newspaper (the comics would be a cute idea) or even paperbags you cut up and decorate with ribbon or even yarn. You can purchase seasonal shopping bags pretty cheap at Walmart or a dollar store. If you need more Christmas cards, how about making some or your own this year?

Another great idea is to do some baking or put together some simple gift baskets. Almost everyone loves to receive cookies and other homemade goodies as Christmas gifts. No matter how you decide to cut back on your spending this year, be sure to preplan and if possible pay for all gifts and supplies with cash. Using your credit card over the holiday season can be very tempting but can also create more debt than you may be able to handle.

At the time of the writing of this article, this years Christmas is just around the corner so you will want to get started preparing as soon as possible. However, the best way to save money over the holidays is to begin preparing for Christmas at the beginning of each new year. You could even start this December 26, right after this years Christmas.
