How to Lower Your Cable Bill

Erik Van Tongerloo
When we started watching television the only possibility was through a TV antenna. We could receive the channels from countries which are located not far from our hometown. The cable was a good invention to get rid of this annoying antenna on the roof of our house and we could receive a lot more channels. With an annual fee for watching television we were safer in case of a lightning storm and also the quality was much better.

After several years the costs started to rise and the only way to reduce costs is switching to a satellite TV system. The only cost of this system is the purchase of a dish antenna and the right connection with your TV system but the introduction of digital television will also increase the costs of this system.

Nowadays cable is used for more applications than watching television and listening radio. It is also used for Internet connections and making telephone calls. Many people don't consider they can reduce the costs by making use of all these services from the same company. People are used to stay with the company they were in the past and this often means a different company for watching television, making phone calls, using Internet services and even cell phones.

When you take one company for all these services you can reduce the costs. Almost every company will give you a special offer for taking all these services by them. Why should you take several companies if one company can give you all these services together for a lower price? The only thing you have to compare is which company give you the best deal for all these services together.

If you want to lower the costs of your cable bill it is also important to get rid of extra channels where you need to pay an extra amount for like movie channels, music channels or some specific sport channels. Examine which channels you regularly watch and mostly the conclusion will be that you only need the minimum package which includes 20 channels or even more in some countries.

Nowadays when digital television is becoming a standard you can limit your expenses by only buying the necessary requirements you need to receive the minimum television channels like a converter box or in some countries also called a digibox or digicorder. Don't pay for the extra features which works like renting a movie or some other features which you don't need.

Checking your bill is necessary to be sure if there are no mistakes which can cost you a lot of money. Especially for the telephone calls and also for the use of Internet; there are several times in a year when you can enjoy of lower charges and discounts (by example during the holiday period on the end of the year) and some companies give also a free month of Internet use if you take a contract for one year or more.

Examine also the phone call plans which are available; many companies give plans where you can make phone calls for free in the evening and during the weekend. The cost for calling during the day is a little bit more expensive but for many people these plans offer a cheaper bill because most phone calls are made in the evening and during the weekend. Most people are working outside during the day and when they are back at home it is already evening and can call for free.
