How to Lower Your Morning Blood Sugar

  1. For me, keeping the evening meal light is one of the keys. I try to eat a small amount of lean protein (4 oz for men, 3 oz for women) such as lean beef, chicken, fish, hard-boiled eggs, etc. Include green vegetables or salad with one tablespoon of dressing.
  2. I avoid starchy foods such as potatoes, salty snacks and the like. If I'm hungry, I have a snack one hour before bed time. It could be half of a piece of fruit such as an orange, apple, peach, etc. For lower sugar, substitute celery for the fruit. Although carrots are a healthy snack, they contain more sugar, so try to have them during the day where you have a chance to burn off the sugar.
  3. Exercise is an essential part of controlling blood sugar. It doesn't need to be strenuous but it does need to be consistent. My doctor recommends for me to walk one half hour, five days a week. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
  4. Keep a food diary and monitor your blood sugar daily. Analyze your results or take them to your doctor to find out what food and exercise combinations work best for you.
