How to Magically Change the Color of Campfire Flames

Kassidy Emmerson
Now that the weather is warming up, we will soon grill hamburgers and steak, and roast hot dogs and marshmallows, over a camp fire. Afterwards, we'll spend some evening time relaxing around the fire. It's a fun way to spend time outdoors with family and friends. If you sit and watch the flames of a campfire, they are mesmerizing just as they are. If you want to magically change the color of the campfire flames, and add some temporary flair to the fire, (and amaze the others), you can easily do it with some common household products.

Caution: Because these tricks involve using chemicals, wait until all the foods have been cooked over the camp fire and it has burned down some before you do them.

The Tossing Method
There are two ways to magically change the color of the campfire flames: the Tossing Method and Making Wax Chemical Disks. Tossing a handful of a chemical into the camp fire is, of course, the easiest method.

The Chemicals You'll Need And Where to Purchase Them
To create white flames, use epsom salts. Find these at a grocery or drug store.
To create yellow/orange flames, use table salt.
To create purple flames, use water softener salt. Find this at a hardware.
To create light green flames, use borax. Find this in the Laundry aisle at a grocery store.
To create green flames, use copper sulfate. Find this at a Home Improvement store.
To create blue flames, use copper chloride. Find this at a rocketry or fireworks supply company, or at a chemistry lab supply company.
To create red flames, use strontium chloride. Find this at a rocketry or firework supply company,
or at a chemistry lab supply company.

Warnings-
Keep the chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.
If you have sensitive skin (like I do), wear gloves to protect your hands when handling the chemicals.
Use caution when melting and handling the wax.

Making Wax Chemical Disks
Set-up several small paper cups on a heat-resistant surface. Melt a pound or so of household wax in a double boiler. Pour approximately a 1/4 inch of a household item into each paper cup. Which chemicals you use will be determined by what color you want the fire to turn.

Put on oven mitts to protect your hands. Then, pour enough melted wax into the cups to just cover the chemicals. Stir the contents of each cup with a small spoon to coat the chemicals before the wax hardens.

Let the wax chemical disks cool thoroughly and harden. Finally, peel off the sides of each paper cup; leave the bottom piece intact. Use just one wax patty at a time to magically change the color of campfire flames.
