How to Maintain Your Car's Value

Make Your Used Car an Asset, Not an Eyesore

There are several reasons why you should maintain your used car's value. Your used car is part of your net worth. This means the more your car is worth, the more your overall holdings are worth. This can be beneficial when trying to obtain credit for purchasing another car or a home.

Keeping your used car in good condition is part of your investment. If you plan to keep the car for several years, maintaining it will help you to reach that goal. If you plan to sell it or trade it for a newer model, keeping it well maintained will make it worth more on resale value.

Taking care of your used car is simple to do. You just need to follow a few guidelines. Set a regular maintenance schedule, treat the used car well and insure that others that use or drive the car follow your rules. Keep all of your service records, as this shows proof that the vehicle has been maintained.

Mechanical Maintenance

If you don't know how to service the car, find a reputable mechanic that you trust. Schedule regular appointments for general maintenance such as oil changes and lubrication, to insure the cars engine is performing properly. Refer to the owners manual for suggested time or mileage requirements.

A reputable mechanic will service the used car with quality oils and lubricants. Insist on quality products, even if you have to pay a little more. Keeping the engine serviced and using quality products will extend the life of the engine, thus increasing your used cars value.

Exterior Maintenance

Keep the car's exterior clean with regular washings. Going through a drive through carwash removes surface dirt and dust. This is fine as a regular routine, but you should occasionally have the car hand washed. Hand washing will remove more sediment and dead paint than the typical spray washing.

Protect the paint by keeping a heavy coat of wax or polish on the car. This will allow the paint to remain clear and vibrant. The wax provides a smooth surface for rain, snow and sleet to slide off instead of standing on the used car's surface.

Keep the wheels clean and polished as well. This will prevent them from rusting or pitting. Clean and shining wheels will also add to your used car's value.

Interior Maintenance

Clean the interior of the car on a regular basis. Nobody values a car that has a filthy interior and is full of trash. Vacuum out the inside f the used car and wipe down the dash and door panels. Do not allow any eating or drinking in the car, especially if you have small children.

The resale value of the used car will be much more if it is smoke free. Many people are allergic to cigarette smoke and they will gladly pay more for a used car that has never been smoked in. Refraining from smoking in the vehicle helps to keep it cleaner and fresher smelling as well. This will cut down on your cleaning time.

Don't listen to the manufacturer or dealers. They want your car to die so you need to buy a new one. Dealers often say you don't need to "break you car in" by only driving 50 mph the frist 500 miles and then changing the oil and brake fluid, e.g. They also say changing the oil every 3,000 miles is not necessary. Don't listen to them. Find an old mechanic and listen to HIM!

You are so right about keeping up the service/maintenance checks.

Very good advice unfortunately I lowered the value of my car when I was pulling out of a very steep driveway and my front bumper dragged on the driveway and dented it a bit. I don't know how the people that live there are able to pull out on a daily basis.

Amazing how just a little planning will keep an auto's return value up there a bit more than if you just drive it till you are ready to trade or sell without taking care of the car. Great tips.
