To begin with, equip yourself with a calendar or notebook to track what you have done with the saltwater tank, more so for procedures that you need to perform only occasionally. It is also very important to note water quality, what you add to your tank and how much (including brand name and manufacturer), as well as anything out of the ordinary. It ensures that you are keeping a record that may enable you to predict a potential problem or allow you to backtrack to figure out what may have happened if something goes wrong. A checklist may be helpful as well to assist in reminding you to perform daily and weekly maintenance checks.
Daily maintenance activities should include checking if all your pets are happy and healthy. Keep a close watch if you notice that a fish doesn't look right somehow. Dead fish will spoil the quality of water because as they deteriorate, ammonia increases to dangerous levels. This can cause sickness and death in your healthy fish. You should clean the protein skimmer cup daily and try not to skip it as far as possible. Checking the water temperature and making any adjustments as well as removing any uneaten food should also be a daily responsibility. You should also make sure that all the equipment is functioning correctly and accessories, such as in-tank thermometers, are still in place. A daily monitoring will help you to anticipate potential problems. Other important jobs to do for proper maintenance of your saltwater fish tank consist of replacing any evaporated water and cleaning off any algae that may be growing on the glass every other day.
What you need to do on a weekly basis is to perform partial water exchanges. If you do not do this, it is difficult to keep your fish tank healthy, unless you have a system that is directly connected to the ocean. You can also perform this task bi-weekly, but this depends both on how well you maintain your system overall, as well as what type of aquatic life you have in your tank. You must clean the glass and remove any salt build-up around or on the tank and its systems. Otherwise, the salt will build up in rather large chunks and could fall back into the tank, affecting the salinity. Salt is also highly corrosive to different types of metals. They function well if you clean them regularly. Also add any trace elements, pH buffers, conditioners or vitamins as needed. If your tank is new, test the water quality including salinity, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH, and specific gravity. Furthermore, replace the filter floss in canister filters and test the water quality at least every two weeks.
Siphon through corals and substrate carefully, clean the protein skimmer, check all hoses and tubing connections and replace or clean airstones, and change the carbon every two months. At three-month intervals, clean filter canisters and hoses thoroughly and change air pads in air pumps. Check for damaged pump impellers and change air valves and UV tubes every six months.
These guidelines will certainly help you to properly maintain your saltwater fish tank. Saltwater tanks contain beautiful aquatic life, so make sure they stay healthy by keeping up to date with your maintenance.
