So the first thing you want to do is clear the dock of any unwanted programs and clear the desktop of any clutter, cluttered desktop is notorious for making the computer run slower. If you remove unwanted programs from the dock, the computer will start up faster as it has less programs to load on the dock when it first starts up.
The next thing you want to do is check to see if your RAM chips are working, you can do this through the apple system profiler and then more info, after that look and see the status of your RAM chips. They should both say OK. You should also look into getting more RAM for your computer because MAC OS X loves RAM. Tiger and Panther especially. If you don't have enough RAM to run Tiger, then downgrade to Panther or Jaguar. That is another way to speed up your Mas OS X
You can also clear unwanted programs and create more disk space because Mac OS X takes some of your hard disk space and uses it as virtual memory or extra RAM. This means that if your hard drive is totally full or close to it you will have problems as the system will not have anywhere to get any virtual memory from. You also could run a disk utility check and check to see if there are any
