If a trip to the hair salon isn't feasible due to your budget or schedule visit this link for some great tips for trimming your hair at home. While the steps listed in this hair makeover article will go a long way towards refreshing your hair, trimming your hair first will drastically improve the effectiveness of these hair treatments. Trimming your hair first will make your hair look healthier by removing the hair which is dead and unhealthy looking. Damaged hair and split ends tend to spread, putting healthy hair at risk. You will also save time and money by using the following hair treatments on only the healthy part of your hair. When trimming your hair look carefully at your hair strands for damage and cut as much of the damaged hair off as you are comfortable with.
After trimming your hair begin your hair makeover regimen by pouring 1 to 1 1/2 cups white vinegar into a small plastic bottle with a lid. How much vinegar you will need depends on how long your hair is. Preferably, you will need enough vinegar to rinse your hair twice.
Once you have prepared the vinegar measure 1/8 to 1/4 of a cup of baking soda into a small cup or bowl with a lid. You will need enough baking soda to scrub your hair and scalp thoroughly. Both the vinegar and baking soda will help remove build-up on your scalp and on your hair. Build-up from dirt, dried oils, and styling products can make your hair look dull and lackluster. This tried and true hair clarifying recipe will leave your hair soft, shiny and healthy looking. It is also inexpensive costing only an average of .20 to .40 depending on the length of your hair.
Use this treatment while you are in the shower, first shampoo your hair as you normally would. After rinsing out the shampoo add a small amount of water to the container holding the baking soda, until it makes a paste. Then use the paste to thoroughly scrub your scalp and hair. Pay special attention to your scalp when scrubbing your hair with the baking soda paste. Build up from natural hair oils and residue from commercial beauty products can clog hair follicles and inhibit hair growth. Clogged hair follicles can also hinder the dispersing of the natural hair oils necessary to product your hair from damage and breakage. Baking soda is a natural abrasive and it will help remove build-up from both your hair strands and scalp without exposing you to harmful toxins.
After scrubbing your hair and scalp with the baking soda paste rinse your hair thoroughly until all of the paste has been removed. Next rinse your hair twice with the vinegar. Vinegar is excellent for hair. It softens hair, removes build-up and brings out hairs natural highlights; this effect is particularly strong with people who naturally have red tones in their hair. Using vinegar on hair will also make it easier to style. After rinsing your hair with the vinegar, leave the vinegar on. Do not rinse it out with water. The vinegar may have a strong scent at first but the scent will quickly fade from your hair.
Once you have used the baking soda and vinegar hair clarifying treatment to remove oils and build-up from commercial hair products it will be time to deep condition your hair. An inexpensive and incredibly effective deep conditioning hair treatment is easy to make.
To make the deep conditioning hair treatment all you will need to do is melt 1/4 to 3/4 of a cup of coconut oil. coconut oil has a very low melting point, to melt it simply hold the container of coconut oil (which is semi-solid at room temperature) under hot running water until it has melted completely into liquid.
Coconut oil is high in saturated fat. That is often something we try to avoid in our diets but externally saturated fats can work wonders on moisture starved and damaged hair. Coconut oil also has a good mineral content of iron, phosphorous and zinc which will help nourish your hair and give it a natural and healthy shine.
Coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair treatment will work wonders on its own, but to really give it an added punch particularly if your hair is very dry or very damaged from split ends, colorings or perms, add the contents of 6 capsules of flax seed oil to the coconut oil and stir well. Flax seed oil is an excellent source of vitamin a. use of flax seed oil in the hair treatment recipe will give your hair incredible shine and added body.
If you do not have flax seed oil available, you may substitute with vitamin e oil. The results will not be as good in my opinion, but the treatment will still work very well.
Add the coconut and flax seed oil treatment to your hair. Use only a small amount near your scalp, where hair is often the oiliest. Instead pay particular attention to the middle of your hair and the ends of your hair. You'll need to use enough oil to completely saturate your hair. When applying the oil to your hair use your hands and take a minute to gently rub the oil into your hair helping it to absorb.
Pile your hair loosely on your head, and put on a shower cap to keep your towels and sheets from getting messy. Then wrap your head with a towel. The shower cap and towel will trap the heat your head naturally emits. The heat will open your hair follicles allowing it to better absorb the coconut and flax seed oil. For best results with the deep conditioning hair treatment allow it to stay on your hair overnight, keeping both the shower cap and towel on while you sleep.
In the morning you will probably need to wash your hair twice in very warm water to remove all of the coconut oil. After two washings you will need only a minimal amount of conditioner, if you need any at all, use your best judgment. After washing out the deep conditioning treatment, towel dry your hair and style as usual. Enjoy your freshly made over hair!
