How to Do Makeup for Your Wedding

Marie Gerber
Your wedding day is the one day of your life where all eyes should be on YOU - so you definitely want to look your absolute best. Even if you don't regularly wear much makeup, your wedding day should be an exception. This is not to say that you want to completely transform yourself. You should still look like you...just a slightly more glamourous you.

Think of your face as a blank canvas. There is one thing you can do before you even begin to apply your makeup to ensure that you look gorgeous on your big day. While snow white skin is very fashionable right now, a healthy glow can make you look slimmer and hide imperfections. As we all now know, baking in the sun is a big no-no, but spray-on tans are an easy and affordable alternative to getting that healthy, sun-kissed look. Just make sure not to go to dark - you want to look like you spent a day at the beach, not like you just escaped from Charlie's Chocolate Factory. Also, make sure you get your tan at least three days before the big event.

Before you begin, you should decide what feature you want to play up. If your best feature is your eyes, focus on them and keep the rest of your face simple. You don't want your features to be competing with each other for attention - it will be visual overload and actually make you look less attractive. For example, if you wear a lot of eye makeup, skip the lipstick and go with a lightly tinted gloss.

On your wedding day, you want to sparkle, but beware of too much glitz and glam. Shimmery products are all the rage these days, but its easy to go overboard - you don't want to look like a sweaty Christmas ornament. Limit shimmer to one area.

If you can afford it, a professional makeup artist can be a great investment, especially if you are fairly unfarmiliar with applying makeup. You are almost guaranteed to look great and it will be one less thing for you to stress about. Also, makeup artists are likely to have high quality products which will last throughout the day. Just make sure that you have your makeup artist practice your look at least once before the big day, so that you can be certain that you will be getting exactly what you asked for. Don't be afraid to try out several makeup artists to find one who works for you.

The same goes if you decide to do your makeup on your own. Practice several looks before the wedding until you have your makeup exactly the way you want it. Consider splurging on some higher quality products than you might normally wear or take a few lessons if you are uncomfortable with doing your own makeup.
