Facing an extended illness is neither a pleasurable nor a desired experience. However, by becoming an informed patient, you will be better equipped to decide on issues concerning your health. Remember your doctor is a human being, according to the American Medical Association; the average American spends a total of about 30 minutes a year with a primary care physician. That's a short time to build a relationship with one of the most important people responsible for your health.

Many individuals are in awe when it comes to their doctor and are too intimated to ask questions. They may also believe that their physician automatically knows what is best for them. Many people treat doctors with an unquestioning trust, which can be detrimental. Always ask questions and get a second opinion.
When you visit your physician, it's always helpful to be knowledgeably about your symptoms or disease. That way you can find out about leading edge tests, treatments, or medical studies. Research will help you ask the right questions when seeing your doctor. A good place to start is by visiting a medical website such as www.mayoclinic.com or www.webmd.com

After you have your list of questions make sure you write them down before your doctor's visit. Sometimes, so much is happening during the appointment that you can forget to questions. Before you leave make sure your doctor answers all your questions. If your doctor can't answer all your questions, they should at least be able to direct you to someone who can. If you doctor is not willing to spend the extra time to answer your questions then find another doctor. Would you let your mechanic, hairdresser, or any other technician treat you that way? If your doctor cannot take the time to answer your questions then how are they taking the time to find the right treatment for you?

If you don't have a regular family physician, get one. Build a good relationship with your physician during your regular checkups and you are relatively healthy. When seeking out a family doctor it's always better to find one that's affiliated with a reputable hospital. Since most doctors refer patients to Physicians that they know professionally, your chances of getting, a high quality referral increases when the physicians are affiliated with a great hospital. In addition, if you need testing or hospital care it's easier for each of your physicians to obtain your medical records if they have privileges at the same hospital.

In addition to finding a good doctor, always keep track and write down your medications, vitamins supplements and over the counter medicines. That way if there is a problem your physician knows about all the things you are taking. Some herbs and vitamins do effect prescribed medications. In some cases, certain herbs or drugs must be stopped weeks prior to having surgery. By knowing what you are taking you can ask you doctor about drug interactions when getting a new prescription or having surgery. .

Also, keep track of your medical issues, for example, multiple infections, recurring illnesses, or sores that keep coming back over the course of a year can be indications of a bigger problem. By tracking your illnesses, you can help your physician identify potential problems before they become real life threatening problems.

How you manage, your healthcare can affect future diagnoses and treatment. Become your own medical advocate, do it for you and your family. In today's medical environment, physicians must see a certain number of patients a day in order to stay in business and have viable practice; as a result, you must be prepared to have your questions and concerns addressed. After all, the health of you and your family is essential and it's up to you to be your own healthcare advocate.
