Have you treated yourself to a manicure or pedicure lately? Manicures and pedicures have become so popular in the world today. Not only are females taking care of their hands and feet, but males are starting to get manicures and pedicures too. The purpose of a manicure and pedicure is to enhance the health and appearance of the nails and feet. Medicures and pedicures are so relaxing and comforting. It's nice to be pampered and to receive that special kind of treatment. It's not unusual to see people rushing off to the local nail salon or spa to take advantage of these services.

A manicure involves caring for your hands and a pedicure involves caring for your feet. Although you can surely care for your hands and feet in the comfort of your home, it is so wonderful to have someone else care for your hands and feet for you. Plus, when you visit a nail salon or spa, you are receiving professional services from trained individuals that have experience and knowledge in knowing how to care for you. So, it is definitely worth the investment, time and effort to visit a place of business for these specific services.

There are different types of manicures and pedicures. Different locations may offer several options and treatments. Quite often, nail salons and spas will offer a basic package and let you add on additional services; or they might already have several packages already put together for you to choose from.

Usually a basic manicure includes clipping and cutting the nails, shaping, pushing back the cuticle and applying nail polish and maybe nail hardner (which makes the nail stronger). Also, you can choose to add acrylic nails. This is when a fake nail is glued to your nail bed and acrylic powder is applied to create a natural look. Then the nail technician or manicurist can cut down the nail to the length of your choice. Acrylic nails normally lasts for about two to three weeks before touch-ups or refills are needed.

It is very important to take care of your fingernails, toenails, and the skin on your hands and feet. So, just like your hands, your feet need special treatment too. A basic pedicure includes the same services as a manicure, with the addition of a warm foot bath and foot exfoliation (scraping the dead skin from under the foot).
Most nail salons and spas offer additional services with your medicure and pedicure. For example, if you are getting a manicure or pedicure, you may have the choice of receiving a paraffin wax treatment. This is when your hands or feet are wrapped in plastic and dipped into a container of warm wax. This process softens your skin and makes it really smooth. Also, most businesses offer hand and feet massages. Just keep in mind that when you choose additional treatment options, you are normally charged extra for these services. In addition to the wax treatment and massages, many salons offer other products that will enhance your medicure and pedicure experience, such as scented lotions and oils. The staff will explain these services to you if you call ahead of time or upon your arrival.

Below are some important tips to keep in mind when visiting a nail salon or spa.

1) Make sure that the business and staff are licensed. Look for a state license hanging on the wall. Also, check to see if your nail technician has a license on display.

2) Make sure the place is clean. Each work station should be clean and orderly. The technicians are supposed to clean all utensils and supplies between clients. In addition, all instruments should be sterilized.

3) Make sure that your manicurist or pedicurist have clean hands with no cuts or soars on them. You do not want to catch an infection.

4) It is a good idea to invest in purchasing your own manicure and pedicure set. Many salons have these available for you to purchase upon your visit. You can bring your own set with you each time that you visit the salon. This will help prevent infections.

5) Bring enough money with you for the services. If necessary, call ahead of time before your appointment or visit. Prices can vary depending on the city and state that you live in, and the nail salon itself. However, a manicure could cost you anywhere from $10-$50.00 (depending on whether or not you want additional services such as acrylic nails, wax treatments or massages). If you are just looking for a basic manicure, with no acrylic nails, etc. then you might get by with paying $10 or $15.00. And a pedicure costs around the same price. Also, ff you visit a spa instead of a local nail salon, then your services are usually higher. Instead of paying $15.00, you might pay $25 or $30.00 for the manicure.

6) Allow enough time to have your manicure and pedicure done. It is best not to schedule any appointments or meetings on the same day that you are going to the nail salon. If you do have other important obligations that day, make sure that you allow enough time to get everything done. A manicure could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 ½ hours. The same things applies to a pedicure. The more you have done, the more time you will be in that salon. Some places will give you a manicure and pedicure at the same time. This cuts down on the time and you will get done a lot sooner.

Manicures and pedicures can be a fun and rewarding experience. Pedicures are good for stress and can relieve a lot of tension from the body. It feels good to treat yourself to something nice, so spoil yourself. You deserve it! Make an effort to take good care of your hands and feet at all times.
