How Man's Best Friend Helped Give a Veteran a New Lease on Life

Abby Greenhill

A dog is man's best friend according to many people, and in the case of David Sharpe, there is no truer statement. You see, David owes his life to his dog, Cheyenne. When Sharpe got back from his job as an Air Force Security Guard in Middle East to fight worse demons back home in Yorktown, Virginia, he was ready to end his life.

He suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and he punched walls in his apartment, drank and told people off for no reason. When he couldn't take it anymore he put his gun in his mouth and was ready to end his life. Lucky for David that his 6-month-old pit bull puppy licked his ear at just that moment and that was the turning point. What that little dog did was to pull his owner back into the world of the living. He knew he had to live in order to take care of that adorable little puppy. Cheyenne was his responsibility and lucky for both of them that he stepped up to the plate.

According to the Washington Post, now, 10 years later, man's best friend is still nuzzling David's hand when she gets the chance. If you are wondering where David got Cheyenne originally, he adopted her from a rescue shelter and she turned out to be his savior so to speak!

David Sharpe, with Cheyenne by his side made a life for himself and you will be happy to hear that he got married last month. David has a job as a program analyst in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. But his joy is his new program called P2V.org (Pets to Vets), a non-profit linking vets and first responders to shelter animals to help out with expenses and training. What a wonderful thing for him to do.

Many people think that dogs are just that dogs, but they are way more than that. If you don't think that man's best friend is a dog, just ask David Sharpe for his opinion!
