How to Manually Drain a Waterbed

Maxwell Payne

Water beds can be a great addition to any bedroom. They offer a unique and comfortable sleeping experience for those who like softer beds. But when it comes time to move, a water bed can be a hindrance.

Moving water beds when full is potentially dangerous to both you and the bed. The bed could become punctured leading to rapid water loss. Therefore it is safer to drain the mattress before attempting to move it.

Remove all bedding such as sheets and comforters. Disconnect the water bed heating power supply if the bed is equipped with a heater.

Run the garden hose from the bed down to an outside faucet. Ideally using gravity, run the hose out of the bedroom window.

Connect one end of the hose to the outdoor faucet. Connect the other end to the mattress drain valve. When you first open the valve some water may leak out.

Place a few heavy books on top of the bed directly above the drain valve on the bed.

Turn on the outdoor faucet and all the water to run for up to 15 seconds. This will push air into the bed drain valve opening it up.

Turn off the faucet and disconnect the faucet end of the garden hose. Let this loose end lie on the ground. Water will begin to siphon out.

You can also use an electric water drain pump. If using this option place the pump hose outside. You do not need to connect it to a water supply first.
Push down on the bed as it drains to get more of the water out.
