How Many Mothers?

A Memorial Day Poem

Barbie Crafts
How many mothers have stood in graveyards cold and gray?

Grieving a soldier killed in war to her still a babe.

The sacrifice that she has made for freedom and good,

Will not be noticed or acknowledged in the way it should.

How many mothers are handed a flag folded crisply with corners three?

The precious bones of their dear child are left in foreign soil or sea.

Herein lies our country's strength: these mothers, strong and brave.

They raised the soldiers, sons and daughters, lying in the grave.

They taught them courage and commitment and other virtues, too.

How many mothers in these times are doing what they do?

Sleepless nights, tears and fears, and waiting for a call;

Trying to go on with their lives, while covered in a pall.

How many mothers of our soldiers do you pass every day?

Have you thanked them for their service while their soldiers are away?
