Suppose according to a belief, if a black cat crosses someone's way while going out, it is a "bad omen." It means something bad is going to happen. What is the link between the "cat" and the "accident?" May be it is all fate and not cat.
I can very well site my own belief here. At some point of time I also used to have a superstition. Whenever I had to start my car from the parked position, I used to first move it forward and then only put a reverse gear. I thought if I don't do it, I will have bad day, may be an accident. But one day, I thought that this belief of mine has started controlling my life. From that day I started moving my car directly in the reverse gear and see I am fine. Also in future, if I ever met with an accident I will never blame the "reverse gear."
I hereby do not want to criticize anybody's feelings or religion. Also I do not have the intention of proving someone wrong. I just want all of us to rethink and find the truth behind these superstitions that are controlling our lives.
I did a small survey on superstitions. I came across some very common superstitions that are widely followed:
Pregnant lady in her 8th month:
A pregnant lady is not allowed to move out in her 8th month. It is followed till now widely. My sister is 8 months pregnant. So her mother-in-law does not allow her to move out. It is considered to be a "bad-omen."
Head bath on Tuesday and Thursday:
One should not take head bath on Tuesday as it is not considered good. Also, girls who have a single brother should not take bath on Thursday as it will increase her brother's troubles in life.
Father dying in his son's lap:
If a father dies in his son's lap he will receive heaven. Otherwise, his soul will never receive peace.
During menstruation:
During menstruation, a girl should not work in the kitchen at least for 3 days. Also, in some places, for these three days she is asked to eat separately.
Moving your legs back and forth:
If you move your legs back and forth while sitting idle, it will increase troubles in your mother's life.
Itching in the palm:
If your left hand's palm is itching, it means it will result into a gain for you. If your right hand's palm is itching, you will incur a loss somewhere.
Breaking of rear view mirror:
If your vehicle's rear mirror is broken, it means it is a fore warning for you. And you should not drive that vehicle until you get the mirror changed.
Starting car from the parked position:
Whenever you start your car from the parked position, you will first move it forward and then reverse.
Pregnant lady on funeral:
A pregnant lady should never attend a funeral or she will mark her baby.
Someone calling from the back:
If you have started to go somewhere and someone calls you from the back it will result into a bad luck.
Dreams:
If you dream of death, it means you will have a long life and if you see marriage, it means a death.
Having a baby:
If you are having a baby you should buy new things only after he/she is born. Or else it will be a bad luck.
Marriage superstition:
The groom should not see the bride until just before the ceremony. Bad luck can come their way if they lay eyes on each other, because they have glimpsed the future before it happened.
Bride should be cautious:
The bride should be cautious not to break anything on her wedding day, to do so might break the love of her life marriage.
Unmarried follow footsteps of the married:
If an unmarried follows the footsteps of the newly weds will get marry soon.

Post a CommentI loved this article. Many superstitions are regional so there were some I hadn't heard of.
Very interesting and entertaining article samaira! My grandmother lived to almost 100 and had a ton of superstitions. One was don't start anything on a Friday or it won't go well, so somehow I don't like to start things on that day due to "bad luck." Also, for some reason I don't like to write out the number 13 on a list. I guess I inherited some superstitions from Gram! Nice work on this article.
I used to think if I got to the top of the stairs I would need to put my right foot up on the next floor first or else something bad would happen. I think this sort of thing is psychologically induced by associated behavior.
Very neat article! It made me laugh a bit!

Interesting read!
My grandmother used to always talk about the palms itching and what it meant!
Those are really interesting, especially the death/marriage omen. Very strange.
Very interesting Samaira
