How to Market Your Writing

Effective Marketing Tools for Writers

Manda Spring
So you are an author, or you think of yourself as an author because of your knack for developing characters that are both fascinating and memorable - or perhaps it is because your mind is always working on new scenes and scenarios. Maybe it is simply that you believe yourself to be a writer as you are versatile in nature and can capture the essence of pretty much anything at anytime and be able to tell the story with ease and a gripping meticulous nature which is true of writers in may backgrounds such as journalism, etc.

Either way you choose to write, or whether you dabble in a few outlets, you need to successfully market your work. Once you have articles finished or manuscript completed you must find a good publisher to get the word out there and allow your name to flow throughout the publishing world.

Many of us start out at the bottom of the ladder, we can not all have our futures paved in gold because of our names or wealth. For most of us we have to work for every break we get and every success that follows. So starting out getting published small is a great place to start, this will help you in your marketing strategies down the road.

How to Market Your Writing: Where to Start

Associated Content (AC) is a great way to get started if your passion is in the journalism, magazine writing field. This is a very lucrative business, writing for magazines. By getting your start on AC you can make money while you gain publicity via the internet. The more articles you write the more your name will flow online. This builds up your credits and it allows you to polish your craft. But AC is not only good for those that are just getting started, seasoned professionals can use this site as a tool as well, but that is another article altogether.

For authors, starting slow is not a bad thing. This type of writing job takes time so the sooner you get used to that little fact the better off you'll be. Nothing in this business happens over night.

Self published authors that have to pay to get their books in print are usually not taken very seriously. It is better to get a small press to take on your project or use a mediocre publishing house that doesn't charge you for the privilege. This is nothing more than a mere stepping stone but it is what happens after this that launches your writing career. Once you have a finished book in your hands you can then send to agents and bigger publishers until the publishing houses begin calling you to request new material, this is called solicitation.

How to Market Your Writing: Absolute MUST!

There are certain things that you absolutely must do when writing is your forte. Not doing them can be career suicide so make sure you are paying attention. To market your writing effectively you need to make sure that your name is well known.

First, right before your book is set to be released get a press release in all of your local newspapers, contact the Departments Editor of any local magazines and make sure that you have a website. If you already have a site make sure that you set up a news section with your own press release.

To market your website you will need to be a networking butterfly. This means that you must fly through the internet, touching any other website that can possibly relate to your work in any way. By 'touching' I suggest leaving comments, your mark if you will, perhaps contacting the person and exchanging links to your sites etc. This will drive many more readers to your work. This is true for writing articles as well. By linking them and setting up a few blogs to point others in the direction of your writing will direct them to your work with ease.

How to Market Your Writing: Media Bound

It is really important, regardless of the type of writing you cover, to use the media to your advantage. By setting up interviews on a literary or journalistic scene you are welcoming those in the higher plains to see you and your writing. This is how you effectively market your work.

Readings at your local libraries, signings at book stores, radio interviews on AM talk shows and yes even a spot on your local news cast works well. These are all media avenues that must be used if you are to advance your career and get others talking about your work.

By accomplishing all of these tips you can successfully move your writing career forward and in doing so attract agents and publishers to you! That is your goal, start small and with a few successes advance to the next level. Just keep moving up the ladder and forward to bigger achievements.

Thank you for the great article. I need to get better at proofreading before I can consider myself a writer ready to market. I guess that's why they have editors.
